AUSTIN, Texas – The Coastal Carolina women’s golf team put the finishing touches on the fall season Tuesday when the Chanticleers tied for seventh place at the Challenge at Onion Creek from the Onion Creek Country Club.
The Chanticleers finished the tournament with a score of 899 after turning in rounds of 293, 281 and 325 on the par-70, 5947-yard course. Iowa State captured the team title with an overall score of 884 (287-288-309), while UALR (294-296-297=887), Illinois (296-281-313=890), Augusta State (288-294-313=895) and Indiana (300-286-311=897) rounded out the top five.
Megan Vaughn of UALR and Tonje Daffinrud of Denver tied for the individual title with overall scores of 214 to finish four strokes over par.
Sophomore Jessica Alexander finished first for the Chants and tied for 16th overall with a two-day score of 222 (73-68-81). Alexander ended day one tied for fifth place after carding a career-low 68 in round two. The Riverview, Fla., native collected five birdies in the second round and surpassed her previous career-low by two strokes.
Senior Alicia Grier was second for Coastal and tied for 18th overall with a three-round score of 223. Grier opened the event with a 73 before carding a career-low 69 in the second round, which included consecutive birdies on holes 11, 12 and 13. The Hagerstown, Md., native turned in a score of 81 Tuesday in the third round.
Freshman Courtney Boe tied for 21st with an overall score of 224 after posting rounds of 74, 71 and 79. Sophomore Brittany Henderson tied for 43rd with an overall score of 231 (73-73-85), while junior Kaitlin Higginbotham rounded out the Chants with a score of 233 (76-73-84) and finished tied for 54th place.
