CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina University women's golf team strung together a solid set of scores and is in second after the first round of the 2009 Wendy's Invitational, Oct. 19. The two-day, 36-hole tournament, hosted by Charleston Southern University, is being played at Coosaw Creek Country Club (Par 71 - 5,898 yards) in Charleston, S.C.
The Chanticleers posted a team score of 17-over 301 and sits in second, three shots behind College of Charleston at 298. Memphis is third at 309, with Big South foes Winthrop and Charleston Southern 14 shots behind the Chants in a tie for fourth at 315. Two other Big South schools are also in the field, with Presbyterian in 12th at 335 and High Point in 13th at 348.
Coastal is paced by freshman Jessica Alexander with a 2-over 73 that has her tied for second with senior Aruka Felgueroso one shot behind at 73 in a tie for fourth. Junior Alicia Grier is also in the top 10 in a tie for seventh at 4-over 75. Junior Carmen Jones is next at 8-over 79, tied for 21st, with freshman Brittany Henderson rounding out the team scores at 83, tied for 45th. Playing individually in their first collegiate action, freshmen Tatum Briele (80) and Taylor Slagle (88) are tied for 32nd and 62nd, respectively, after the opening 18.
The Chants will play the final round of the tournament with College of Charleston and Memphis on Tue., Oct. 20.
