GREENVILLE, N.C. - Final round action of the 2012 Lady Pirate Intercollegiate has been cancelled due to unplayable conditions, East Carolina head coach Kevin Williams announced Tuesday morning.
The two-day, 54-hole event, which was being played at the par-72, 6,004-yard Greenville Country Club, was reduced to an 18-hole tournament after torrential rain Monday afternoon, causing the cancellation of the final 36-holes.
With the rain-shortened event, Coastal finishes tied for fifth overall with an 18-hole tally of 303 (+15). Senior Jessica Alexander tied for fourth overall to earn all-tournament honors after firing an even-par round. The top five finish marks the eighth of her career and first since the 2010-11 season. Brittany Henderson ties for 12th in the 95-competitor field with a score of 73 (+1). Sophomore Frida Castillo and freshmen Marissa Hinchman and Lena Schaeffner posted identical scores of 79 (+7) to tie 48th.
Maryland claims the 2012 team title for the third consecutive year with a 7-over-par 295. The Terrapins and UNC Wilmington were tied after 18 holes, but due to the fifth player tie breaker rule, Jessica Gregory's 11-over 83 won out for Maryland over Danielle Lamy's 16-over 88. Old Dominion (301) finished third, followed by Elon (302), while Coastal and Southern Miss finished in a tie for fifth at 303. Host East Carolina finished 10 strokes behind the leaders at 17-over (305).
The Terrapins become just the second school during the 12-year history of the event to win three-straight team titles following East Carolina from 2000-02.
Maryland's Juliet Vongphoumy claimed medalist honors with a 4-under 68 finishing two strokes ahead of Boston College's Cristina McQuiston (70) and three strokes ahead of UNC Wilmington's Lori Beth Adams (71). Eight golfers finished tied for fourth at even par and were named to the all-tournament squad (top five finishers including ties).
