Alexander Tied For 4th; Chants 5th Overall Through 18 Holes
Oct. 8, 2012
GREENVILLE, N.C. - Behind top 15 performances by seniors Jessica Alexander and Brittany Henderson the Coastal Carolina women's golf team is tied for fifth in the 20-team field at the East Carolina-hosted Lady Pirate Intercollegiate.
Alexander is tied for fourth overall after carding an even-par 72 on the 6,004-yard course. Alexander made the turn at 1-under thanks to a trio of birdies. She would push to 2-under after her fourth birdie on the par-4 14th hole; however, a double-bogey on 18 left her even on the round.
Henderson shot a 1-over 73 on the day to tie for 12th in the 95-competitor field. The Smiths Falls, Ontario, native exchanged a birdie for a bogey in her opening nine to make the turn at even-par. Bogeys on 11 and 16 moved her to 2-over with two holes to play. But the veteran sank her birdie putt on the par-5 18th to finish with a 73.
Sophomore Frida Castillo and freshmen Marissa Hinchman and Lena Schaeffner each shot a 7-over 79 to tie for 48th overall with nine other competitors. Hinchman and Schaeffner both carded a pair of birdies on the day, while Castillo shot par on 12 of her holes.
Two-time defending Lady Pirate Intercollegiate champion Maryland is tied with UNC Wilmington for the lead after opening round play with a 7-over par 295. Old Dominion (301) stands alone in third six strokes behind the leaders, while Elon (302) is one shot back behind the Monarchs in fourth. Rounding out the top five are No. 33 Coastal Carolina (305) and Southern Miss (305) at 15-over. Host East Carolina is 10 strokes behind the leaders after an opening round 305.
The two-day, 54-hole event has been reduced to just 36 holes after second round action was washed out at the Greenville Country Club. After two hours of action, play was halted for 90 minutes due to lightning in the area during intermediate showers. When the golfers resumed play and finished first round action, heavier rains entered the area and play was halted for good around 4 p.m. (ET) leaving officials to cancel second round play all together.
The Chants tee off on the final round of the tournament starting at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
