MOUNT PLEASANT - Propelled by Lena Schaeffner and Emee Herbert the Coastal Carolina women's golf team is second on the team leaderboard at the Charleston Southern-hosted CSU Wendy's Invitational after 36 holes of play at Rivertowne Country Club's Arnold Palmer Signature Course. Schaeffner is in second on the individual leaderboard, while Herbert is fifth.
The Chanticleers carded rounds of 298-290 for a two round total of 588 and trail College of Charleston (290-287=577), ranked 45th by Golfstat, by 11 strokes with 18 holes of golf to play. The Chants have a 21 stroke lead on third-place Wofford (312-297=609). Big South members Radford (320-290=610) and the host Buccaneers (306-304=610) are tied for fourth in the 13-team field.
Schaeffner paced the Chanticleers with rounds of 72-70=142 and is three shots off the lead in the 70-competitor field. Her first round featured birdies on the par-4 seventh and 18th holes to go along with 15 pars. The sophomore then turned in five birdies and 11 pars on the second round. The under par round was her third of the season and her second lowest score of the season.
Herbert shot rounds of even-par to tally a 144 score after 36 holes and is five shots back on the individual list. Herbert finished the day with six birdies and six bogeys - three each per round. The rounds were the first of par or better for Herbert this season and the 144 36-hole score is also her lowest of the campaign.
Sophomore Marissa Hinchman is tied for 12th after rounds of 75-74. Her 149 score was aided by a birdie and 30 pars. Frida Castillo is tied for 19th with rounds of 79-74, for a 153 tally. Nadia Luttner rounded out the Chanticleer team scorers with a 160 total score following rounds of 82-78.
The Chanticleer also entered Brooke Kochevar, Courtney Boe, Saskia Sterud and Ashley Yarbrough in the field as individuals. Kochevar opened the day with a 71, the second lowest first round tally, and followed with a second-round 76. She is tied for fifth overall with a 147 total.
Boe shot a first round 81 then shaved 10 strokes off in the second round to post a season-best 1-under 71. She is tied for 18th over. Sterud (85-72=157) and Yarbrough (79-79=158) stand tied for 37th and 39, respectively.
The invitational concludes with a final 18 holes of play on Tuesday, starting at 9 a.m. with a shotgun start.
