Hinchman in Second at The Challenge at Onion Creek

AUSTIN, TEXAS - Marissa Hinchman opened the 2013 edition of The Challenge at Onion Creek with a career-best round of 69 and after a second-round 72, the sophomore sits in second on the individual leaderboard at the par-70, 8,821-yard Onion Creek Original Course.
With Hinchman leading the way, Coastal Carolina is tied for fifth on the team leaderboard with a 36-hole score of 589 (291-298). Texas Tech leads the 11-team field with a two-round score of 582 (291-291), while Kansas, ranked 27th by Golfstat, is in second with a 583 (294-289) score. Miami (293-291=584) is third followed by host-Texas State (294-291=585). Iowa (297-292=589) is tied with the Chanticleers for fifth.
Hinchman, who opened play on the second hole, was two-over through four holes; however, she steadied to play her next four holes at even par. She then carded back-to-back birdies on holes 11 and 12 to move back to par. Seven more pars and a birdie on the par-5 18th hole led to her career-best round of 69. Hinchman's second round featured birdies on the 11th and 14th holes, but four bogeys ended her day with a 2-over 72. Her 141 36-hole score is the lowest of her Chanticleer career by five strokes.
Junior stalwart Frida Castillo, appearing in her 25th collegiate tournament, is tied for 15th in the 61-competitor field with a 7-over score of 147. Castillo opened the day with a first-round score of 76 despite sinking two birdie putts. She improved by five strokes over her second round to shoot a 1-over 71. Castillo ended the day with five birdies and 20 pars.
Nadia Luttner is 21st overall with a 9-over score of 149. Luttner was 4-over through 14 holes in the first round, but recovered with three straight birdies on the 16th, 17th and 18th holes to end the round with a 1-over 71. Her second round was not as kind as she posted an 8-over 78 with only a single birdie on the par-5 first hole.
Emee Herbert (75-78=153) is tied for 30th, while Lena Schaeffner (80-77) is tied for 43rd. Herbert notched two birdies over her 36 holes of play. Schaeffner benefitted from a single birdie on the day.
Saskia Sterud, playing as an individual, rounded out the Coastal Carolina contingent with scores of 80-81=161 and is 50th in the individual standings.
The Challenge at Onion Creek concludes with a final 18 holes of play on Tuesday.
