DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Coastal Carolina women’s golf team made history on Saturday when it advanced to the NCAA Championships following a fourth place finish at the NCAA East Regional from the LPGA International Golf Course.

The Chanticleers became the first women’s golf team in school history and the first team in Big South history to advance to the NCAA Championships for the right to compete for a national title.

Coastal Carolina will take part in the NCAA Championships May 16-21 at the Traditions Club in College Station, Texas.  The event will be hosted by Texas A&M University.

“It’s a huge honor to represent the conference as we play for a national championship later this month,” Coastal Carolina head coach Katie Quinney said.  “It’s very special for Coastal Carolina as well, but I also don’t think this will be our last time making the NCAA Championships.  We have a very young team and I expect us to back in this position next season too.”

The Chanticleers finished with a three-day score of 876 (286-298-292) and finished 12 strokes over par on the par-72, 6,271 yard course.  No. 3 Alabama (287-284-295=866), No. 21 North Carolina (293-282-293=868) and No. 10 Arizona State (295-288-288=871) were the only three teams to finish ahead of Coastal Carolina.

No. 9 California (290-295-293=878), No. 4 Purdue (295-285-299=879), No. 25 Florida (298-297-285=880) and No. 23 Vanderbilt (302-295-293=890) round out the eight teams that also advanced to the NCAA Championships.

Big South Golfer of the Year Jessica Alexander finished tied for third overall after turning in a score of 216 (69-78-69) to finish at even par.  Alexander birdied four of the first six holes of the back nine on Saturday, which included opening the day with consecutive birdies on holes 10, 11 and 12 on her way to finishing three-under par on the back nine.  She finished her day by making par on seven of the first eight holes of the front nine before capping her tournament with a birdie on hole 9.

Alexander carded a 78 in round two and was two-over par after seven holes of the front nine, but birdied the final two holes to finish at even par.  She finished her afternoon by making par on seven of nine holes on the back nine.  The Riverview, Fla., native had four birdies in round one and shot three-under par with a score of 69.

“I think Jessica played great for us all three rounds,” Quinney said.  “She birdied the first three holes of the day and really could have birdied the first six.  She got off to a great start and was very calm and just had a lot of fun.”

Senior Alicia Grier tied for 11th place and finished two-over par with an overall score of 218.  Grier put together a very steady round on Saturday to move up six places in the overall standings.  Grier made par on the first five holes of the back nine before making a birdie on hole 15.  She went on to make par on the final three holes of the back nine and the first four of the front nine.  After a bogey on hole 5, Grier answered by making par on the final four holes to finish the day at even par.

Grier shot a 73 in round two and made par on seven holes on the front nine and featured birdies on three of the first five holes of the back nine.  The Hagerstown, Md., native also shot a 73 on Thursday in round one, which included four birdies.

Junior Kaitlin Higginbotham tied for 20th overall after she carded a 74 in round three on her way to a final score of 220.  Higginbotham featured two birdies on the back nine and two more on the front nine, which included one on hole 9 as she finished the round two-over par.

Higginbotham shot a 75 in round two and turned in a birdie on hole 3 and made par on five other holes on the front nine.  After Higginbotham carded a double bogey on hole 9, she posted a steady finish by making par on each hole of the back nine.  She fired a 71 in round one and produced four birdies.

Big South Freshman of the Year Courtney Boe tied for 49th with an overall score of 226.  Boe fired a 77 in round three and made par on the first five holes of the back nine.  She went on to record a birdie on hole 7 of the front nine en route to finishing the day five-over par.

Boe featured a birdie on hole 7 of the front nine and made par on seven holes on the back nine in round two on her way to finishing the day with a 76.  She shot a 73 in round one and had four birdies.

Sophomore Brittany Henderson finished the tournament tied for 78th place after shooting an 80 on Saturday.  On Friday in round two, Henderson finished the front nine at even par and turned in a birdie on the fifth hole on her way to a 74.  She posted a steady performance on the back nine and made par on seven holes and had a birdie on hole 15.  She finished round one with a 77 on Thursday.

“I couldn’t be more proud of the way our team played these last three days,” Quinney said.  “We had a great start on Thursday and really played like I knew we were capable of.  I thought we were a little bit tense and under pressure in the second round, but today we came back out more relaxed and weren’t nearly as tense and I think that showed by our result.”
