DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Coastal Carolina women’s golf team stands in fifth place after two rounds of play at the NCAA East Regional from the LPGA International Golf Course.

The Chanticleers need to finish in the top 8 of the event to advance to the NCAA Championships for the first time in school history.  The third and final round of the regional begins Saturday morning at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start.

Senior Alicia Grier leads the way for the Chanticleers and is tied for 17th overall after shooting a 73 in round two.  Grier made par on seven holes on the front nine and featured birdies on three of the first five holes of the back nine.  The Hagerstown, Md., native also shot a 73 on Thursday in round one, which included four birdies.

Junior Kaitlin Higginbotham is also tied for 17th with her overall score of 146 following her 75 in round two.  Higginbotham turned in a birdie on hole 3 and made par on five other holes on the front nine.  After Higginbotham carded a double bogey on hole 9, she posted a steady finish by making par on each hole of the back nine.  She fired a 71 in round one and produced four birdies.

Sophomore Jessica Alexander carded a 78 in round two and enters the final day of the tournament tied for 22nd place.  Alexander was two-over par after seven holes of the front nine, but birdied the final two holes to finish at even par.  She finished her afternoon by making par on seven of nine holes on the back nine.  The Riverview, Fla., native had four birdies in round one and shot three-under par with a score of 69.

Freshman Courtney Boe shot a 76 Thursday and has compiled an overall score of 149 through two rounds of play and is tied for 38th place.  Boe, the 2011 Big South Freshman of the Year, featured a birdie on hole 7 of the front nine and made par on seven holes on the back nine.  She shot a 73 in round one and had four birdies.

Sophomore Brittany Henderson moved up 15 spots on Friday and is now tied for 54th place after shooting a 74 in round two.  Henderson finished the front nine at even par and turned in a birdie on the fifth hole.  She posted a steady performance on the back nine and made par on seven holes and had a birdie on hole 15.  She finished round one with a 77 on Thursday.

“We struggled a little bit today in comparison to what we did yesterday, but we still feel good about our position heading into round three,” Coastal Carolina head coach Katie Quinney said.  “Overall, we had a pretty good day today and were able to hold our scores against a little bit tougher competition then what we faced on Thursday.  We’re going to relax tonight and get a good night rest and just take it one hole at a time tomorrow.”
