Women's Golf Claims Runner-Up Finish At Big South Championship

NINETY SIX - After battling rain on the final day of the 2014 Big South Women's Golf Championships, Coastal Carolina carded a 300 for a 54-hole total of 12-over 894 to finish runner-up at the par 72, 7,083-yard Patriot Club at Grand Harbor.
The 894 was Coastal's third-best 54-hole score of the 2013-14 season, is the 17th best 54-hole score in CCU history and is the program's second-best 54-hole score at the conference championships. Campbell won the team title with a conference record even-par 864, while Fighting Camel Louise Lattorre won individual medalist with a 3-under 213.
Joining Latorre on the Big South All-Tournament Team by way of their top-five finishes were Campbell's Tahnia Ravnjak and Kaylin Yost, along with Chanticleers Frida Castillo, Bailey Cocca and Lena Schaeffner.
Coastal finished 27 strokes ahead of third-place High Point (301-304-316=921). Gardner-Webb (306-313-315=934) and Winthrop (310-312-314) rounded out the top-five in the nine-team field.
Castillo, an All-Big South selection by the league's coaches, was Coastal's top finisher at the event, carding a 3-over 219 (73-71-75) to place fourth in the 45-competitor field. The junior carded a 3-over 75 on the final day of the tournament. Her round featured two birdies and 12 pars. She made both of her birdies on the front nine to battle a bogey and double-bogey. She moved to 3-over after bogeys on 10 and 11 before closing the round with seven straight pars. She ended the tournament carding seven birdies.
Cocca posted her best finish as a Chanticleer, tying for fifth overall. The sophomore turned in a career-best 8-over 224 (75-75-74) 54-hole score. Her final round 74 was her second lowest of the season. Cocca carded three birdies against one bogey on the front nine to make the turn at 2-under. She struggled over the ensuing seven holes, turning in five bogeys and two pars to move to 3-over. She steadied and closed the round with a par and a birdie on the par-5, 465-yard 18th hole. She counted eight birdies throughout the three-round event.
Schaeffner, an All-Big South selection, also tied for fifth on the individual leaderboard with an 8-over 224 score. Schaeffner (71-77-76) posted eight birdies 34 pars during her three rounds. Her final round 76 was highlighted by birdies on the par-4 third hole and one each on the par-5 13th and 18th holes. She was hindered on the day by double-bogeys on holes five and 11.
Emee Herbert finished tied for 18th overall with her three day total of 17-over par 233. Castillo shot a 78 on Sunday, an 80 on Monday and closed the tournament with a 3-over 75 for her 233 on Tuesday. She finished the day with one birdie to go along with 14 pars.
All-conference selection Marissa Hinchman ended the tournament 35th overall with a 240 54-hole score. Hinchman shot rounds of 86, 74 and 80 to tally her 24-over 240. She turned in two birdies during each round to close the championship with six birdies and 21 pars.
Chanticleers Await Regional Announcement
Coastal Carolina awaits word on an NCAA regional bid. The regionals are set for May 8-10 at three locations: Florida State (East Region), Oklahoma State (Central Region) and Washington (West Region).
The top eight team finishers along with the top two individuals at each regional advance to the NCAA Women's Golf Championship Finals which take place May 20-23 at the Tulsa Country Club in Tulsa, Okla.
