Henderson and Schaeffner Co-Lead Big South Championship

NINETY SIX - Coastal Carolina's Brittany Henderson and Lena Schaeffner are the co-leaders of the 2013 Big South Championship after two rounds of play at the par-72, 6,083-yard The Patriot Club at Grand Harbor course. The Chanticleers hold a one stroke lead over Campbell on the team leaderboard with two-day 588 total.
Henderson fired the low round of the day as she carded a 1-under 71. Coupled with her first-round 73, the senior moved into a tie with Schaeffner on the individual leaderboard with a 36-hole tally of 144 (E). Henderson used a birdie on the par-3 fourth hole to make the turn at 1-under. She picked up another birdie on the par-5 13th to stand at 2-under. However, she bogeyed her next hole before finishing out her round with pars. The 1-under round is the second in Henderson's career at the Big South Championship, she also shot a 71 over the final round of the 2012 championship.
Schaeffner, a freshman, continued to put together the best tournament of her young career with a 1-over 73. After leading the tournament field with a 71 on Sunday, Schaeffner has a career-best 36-hole score of even-par 144. The Rettigheim, Germany, native started the day with three pars before stumbling with back-to-back bogeys on three and four. She regained her composure to card 13 straight pars before closing her round with a birdie on the par-5, 465-yard 18. She currently co-leads the tournament in par-4 scoring at even-par and total pars with 28.
Senior Jessica Alexander (72-78=150) is tied for sixth in the 45-competitor field after posting a 6-over 78. Alexander carded a birdie on the round, but was hindered by a pair of double-bogeys. Frida Castillo (76-75=151) jumped two spots up the leaderboard and is currently tied for eighth. Castillo shot a 3-over 75 on the day. She was 4-over through her front nine, but used birdies on 12, 13 and 15 to play the back nine 1-under.
Marissa Hinchman, a freshman, shot a 3-over 77 on the day and is tied for 12th with a 9-over 153 (76-77) 36-hole score. Hinchman carded two birdies and 11 pars on the round, but was hampered by four bogeys and a triple-bogey on six.
Coastal (292-296=588) surrendered four strokes to Campbell (297-292=589) over the second round of play, but the Chants continue to lead the Fighting Camels one stroke with 18 holes to play. Gardner-Webb (306-310=616) is third on the team leaderboard followed by Charleston Southern (315-305=620). Longwood (315-306=621) is fifth followed by High Point (321-307=628), Radford (315-316=631), Presbyterian College (313-322=635) and Winthrop (315-321=636).
The tournament concludes with a final 18 holes on Tuesday. The championship team will receive the Big South's automatic bid to an NCAA Regional.
