Schaeffner and Chants Lead Big South Championship after 18
April 14, 2013
NINETY SIX - Freshman Lena Schaeffner and Coastal Carolina lead the 2013 Big South Championship after the first round of play at par-72, 6,083-yard The Patriot Club at Grand Harbor course.
Schaeffner fired the low round of her career over the opening round, signing her first sub-par scorecard with a 1-under 71. The round was only the 13th in Coastal Carolina history below par at a Big South championship event. She opened the tournament with a birdie on one followed by pars on seven of her next eight holes to make the turn at even. Another par on 10 and a birdie on 11 put her back under par with seven holes to play. She suffered her second bogey of the day on the par-3 15th hole, but responded with two pars and a birdie over her final three holes to turn in the day's lowest round.
With Schaeffner leading the way, the 39th-ranked Chanticleers sit atop the team leaderboard with a 4-over 292. The round is the second lowest ever recorded by Coastal at the Big South Championship and the sixth lowest in championship history. Campbell, ranked 34th, trails the Chants by five strokes after posting a 9-over 297. Gardner-Webb (306, +18) is third followed by Presbyterian College (313, +25) in fourth. Longwood, Winthrop, Radford and Charleston Southern are tied for fifth with matching 315 (+27) tallies. High Point rounded out the field with a 33-over 321.
Including Schaeffner, each Chanticleer turned in a top 10 effort. Jessica Alexander shot an even-par 72 and is tied for second in the 45-competitor field. Reigning individual medalist Brittany Henderson fired a 1-over 73, tying for fourth. Marissa Hinchman and Frida Castillo shot matching 4-over 76s to tie for 10th with five other individuals.
Alexander, the championship's 2011 individual medalist, played the course perfectly over her opening nine, recording three birdies and six pars to make the turn at 3-under. However, back-to-back bogeys on 10 and 11 and another on 17 pushed the senior to even-par round.
Henderson, the 64th-ranked individual in the Golfstat top-100, co-led the field with 13 pars over the 18 holes of play. She also carded birdies on the par-4, 323-yard third hole and the par-5, 495-yard 13th.
Hinchman and Castillo both finished the round with two birdies. Hinchman also benefitted from 11 pars, while Castillo had 10.
The tournament continues with 18 holes on Monday followed by a final 18 holes on Tuesday. In addition to the action on the course Monday, the Big South will announce its annual conference awards winners at a banquet.
