NINETY SIX - The Coastal Carolina University women's golf team is in second place after turning in a 9-over 297 over the opening round of the 2014 Big South Women's Golf Championship contested at The Patriot Club at Grand Harbor.
Campbell, ranked 53rd by Golfstat, leads the field with a conference record 10-under 278 on the par-72, 6,083-yard track. The Chanticleers trail the Camels by 19 strokes and lead third-place High Point (301) by four strokes. Gardner-Webb (306) and Presbyterian College (309) are also in the top-five on the team leaderboard. Charleston Southern and Winthrop are tied for sixth with scores of 310, followed by Radford (311) and Longwood (316).
The Chanticleers were led on the day by All-Big South selection Lena Schaeffner. The sophomore, who played the front nine 2-under, finished the round with a 1-under 71 and is fourth on the individual leaderboard. She tallied three birdies on the day, including one on the par-5, 465-yard 18th hole. After playing the front 2-under, Schaeffner started the back nine with back-to-back bogeys, but pared her next six holes before sinking a short birdie putt on 18.
Frida Castillo is eighth overall after posting a 1-over 73. The all-conference player started her day with two pars before suffering her first bogey of the day. She closed the front nine with five more pars and a bogey to make the turn at 2-over. She followed a pairs of pars on 10 and 11 with back-to-back birdies on 12 and 13 to move back to even-par. She then carded pars on 14-17 before three-putting for bogey on 18.
Bailey Cocca turned in a 3-over 75 and is tied for 12th overall. Cocca finished the day with four birdies, including on three of her final four holes of the day. She made the turn at 1-over, before turning in one of the more interesting back nine's of the day. The sophomore started the back nine with a par before posting a bogey on 11 and a double-bogey on 12. She followed with a par on 13 before bogeying 14. She then rallied with birdies on 15 and 16, but suffered a bogey on 17 before concluding the round with her fourth birdie of the afternoon.
Emee Herbert is tied for 23rd overall after posting her 6-over 78 score. She counted 12 pars and six birdies on the afternoon as she played both the front and back nine 3-over.
Marissa Hinchman shot a 14-over 86 to round out the Coastal contingent. The sophomore is tied for 44th overall.
The tournament continues with 18 holes on Monday followed by a final 18 holes on Tuesday.
