April 11, 2012
NINETY SIX, S.C. - Coastal Carolina's Brittany Henderson fired a 1-under 71 on the final day of the 2012 Big South Women's Golf Championship to set the tournament's 54-hole scoring record with a 2-under 214 on her way to winning individual medalist honors. The Chanticleers claimed the runner-up finish on the par-72, 6,009-yard Patriot Golf Club at Grand Harbor.
Henderson's record-setting performance was also her first career victory along with her career-low 54-hole total. Moreover, her championship medalist honor was the second consecutive for Coastal, the third in four years and seventh overall.
"I am truly proud of the way Brittany along with the team as a whole competed today and throughout the tournament," said head coach Katie Quinney. "Brittany really had a great tournament after tying the all-time low round on Tuesday and shooting 1-under today. She has shown why she is a multiple All-Conference selection and our top golfer throughout the spring season."
After pulling within a stroke of 36-hole leader Campbell, the defending champion Chanticleers were unable to topple the Fighting Camels over the final 18 holes of play. Campbell (294-300-296=890) shot 8-over on the day to finish six strokes ahead of Coastal (298-297-301=896). Gardner-Webb (307-304-310=921) finished third followed by Charleston Southern (321-309-308=938) and Winthrop (313-306-320=939) to round out the top five.
Henderson, who won the tournament by seven strokes over teammate Frida Castillo and Player of the Year Kaylin Yost of Campbell, opened her final round with a birdie and a par before a bogey on three pushed her back to even. The junior then fired two more pars before trading two bogeys for a par and birdie over the remainder of the front nine. She then collected herself and recorded four consecutive pars to open her back nine. Henderson would wrap-up her record-setting three days of golf with three pars sandwiched between birdies on 14 and 18.
Castillo played her way to All-Big South honors as she carded a career-best finish to tie for second. The freshman shot a 1-over 73 on the day to record a career-best 54-hole score of 221. She started the round with a bogey on one followed by seven straight pars and a birdie on nine to make the turn at even par. Bogeys on 10 and 15 bookended four pars; however, she would birdie the par-3 17th hole to finish at 1-over on the day.
Also playing her way to All-Conference honors was junior Jessica Alexander, who finished sixth overall. Alexander (73-78-75=226) carded a 75 on the day to end the tournament at 10-over par. The Riverview, Fla., native turned in 11 pars and two birdies over the final round; however, three bogeys in a six-hole span on the back nine led to her 75.
Senior Kaitlin Higginbotham finished in a tie for 17th with her 54-hole total of 19-over par 235. Higginbotham shot a 74 on Monday, a 79 on Tuesday and closed out the tournament with 10-over par 82 for her 235 on Wednesday.
Coastal Carolina's fifth golfer, junior Eugenia Guerra tied for 43rd with a 250 total after rounds of 84, 81 and 75 to round out the Chanticleer lineup.
