NINETY SIX, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina women's golf team shot a 10-over 298 Monday and sits in second place after 18 holes at the 2012 Big South Golf Championship, held at the par 72, 6,009-yard Patriot Golf Club at Grand Harbor.
The Chanticleers, the defending tournament champions, are four shots behind Campbell (294).
Individually, Coastal has four players among the top 10. Junior Jessica Alexander leads the Chants, shooting 1-over par 73 and tying for third. She is two shots off the individual lead as Campbell's Michelle Koh fired a 1-under par 71. Teresa Urquizu of Campbell shot an even-par 72 with Alexander and the Fighting Camels Kaylin Yost each shooting 73.
Alexander was 2-over at the turn and 4-over through 12, but rallied to shoot 3-under over the final six holes. The Riverview, Fla., native sank her birdie putt on 15 before closing her round with the lone eagle of the day on the par-5, 465-yard 18th.
Also in the top 10 for Coastal are senior Kaitlin Higginbotham, junior Brittany Henderson and freshman Frida Castillo. Higginbotham, who fired a 2-over 74 to tie for fifth, was even on the front nine thanks to a bogey and a birdie. She would stumble on the back nine with three bogies before closing the round with a much needed birdie on 18.
Like Higginbotham, Henderson also traded a bogey for a birdie to make the turn at even-par. Henderson opened her back nine with a bogey and two pars, but posted a trio of bogeys over the ensuing holes. She would recover to close the round with a pair of pars and a birdie to tie for seventh with a 3-over 75.
Castillo was even through nine with two birdies and two pars showing on her card. The Cordoba, Mexico, native carded six pars over her next seven holes to stand at 1-over as she stepped to the 17th tee box. Castillo would shoot 3-over on the final two holes to post a 76 to tie for 10th in the 50 competitor field.
Eugenia Guerra shot an 84 to stand in a tie for 39th.
