OXFORD, Miss. - The 49th-ranked Coastal Carolina women's golf team opened the M&F Bank Rebel Intercollegiate in grand fashion, shooting a school record 4-under 284 at the par-72, 6,313-yard Ole Miss Golf Course.

Each of Coastal's scorers finished in the top 20 of the 96-competitor field over the opening round and the Chants' fifth team member was just outside the top 25 in 26th (tied) place. Moreover, all five Chanticleer birdied the 530-yard, par-5 seventh hole.

"The ladies really took advantage of a very scoreable course," said head coach Katie Quinney. "It is always great to break a school record, but we are a long way from the end of the tournament. We need to continue to play great golf in order to contend for the team title."

The Chants lead the tournament, which includes four other Golfstat top-50 ranked teams, by five strokes after the first time around the course. Baylor, ranked 24th, and Mississippi State finished tied for second with matching 1-over 289s. East Tennessee State (290, +1) is fourth followed by No. 29 LSU (291, +3) and No. 34 Kentucky (291, +3) tied for fifth. Twentieth-ranked Tulane sits seventh in the 18-team field after a 5-over 293 score.

Reigning Big South Golfer of the Week Brittany Henderson led the way for the Chants with her season-best 3-under 69, placing fifth overall. The round is Henderson's first in the 60's this season and the second of her career. The senior, who opened on the back nine, pared her first seven holes of the day before finding a birdie on 17. Following a par on 18, Henderson traded a birdie for a bogey on one and two before finishing her round with two more birdies and five pars.

Fellow senior Jessica Alexander joined Henderson under par with a 70 (-2), tying for sixth. The round was Alexander's seventh at par or better this season and her second in as many tournaments. Alexander played her first nine at even par after posting a pair of birdies to counter two pars. She was 1-over after 14 holes before catching fire and birdying the sixth, seventh and eighth holes. She closed the round with a par on the 350-yard ninth holes en route to her 2-under score.

Freshman Lena Schaeffner carded a career-best 72 to tie for 11th overall. Schaeffner started the round 3-over through seven holes before a pair of birdies sent her to the tee box on one at 1-over. She played her first four holes on her back nine even, but suffered a bogey on five. However, she went on to bookend back-to-back birdies with pars to finish the round even.

Frida Castillo stands tied for 17th after posting a 1-over 73. Castillo played her front nine at 3-over, but countered with a 2-under back nine thanks to birdies on the seventh and ninth holes. Marissa Hinchman turned in a 2-over 74, tying her for 26th on the individual leaderboard. The freshman finished the day with four birdies, including three straight on the sixth, seventh and eighth holes.

The tournament will resume with 18 holes Saturday and conclude with a final 18 holes on Sunday.
