Henderson Leads Coastal to Third-Place Finish at Briar's Creek

JOHNS ISLAND - Propelled by Brittany Henderson's seventh career top-five tournament finish and a top-10 showing by Jessica Alexander, the Coastal Carolina women's golf team claimed third at the 18-team Briar's Creek Invitational hosted by College of Charleston at the Golf Club at Briar's Creek.

Henderson placed third at the 96-competior event after leading the field through both 18 and 36 holes of play. The senior shot an opening round 71 followed by a 74 and 76 for a 54-hole tally of 221 (+5). She finished the tournament with an eagle, five birdies and 38 pars. Henderson now owns a career scoring average of 76.20, the third best in Chanticleer history.

Alexander tied for seventh overall after posting rounds of 72-76-79 for an 11-over total. The top-10 is the senior's fifth in 10 events this season and the 17th of her career. Alexander hit the shot of the day for the Chants as she eagled the par-5, 529-yard seventh hole. She wrapped up the tournament playing 36 of the 54 holes at par or better.

Marissa Hinchman tied for 40th with a 235 (81-78-76). The freshman improved three spots on the leaderboard over her first round standing as she shaved stokes off each of her previous rounds. She finished the tournament with five birdies. Frida Castillo came home 43rd (tied) overall with a 54-hole total of 236. Castillo knocked eight strokes off her opening round 84 to post matching scores of 76 over her final two times around the 6,008-yard course. Lena Schaeffner rounded out the Coastal contingent with a t-65th-place showing. She carded a final score of 241 (81-80-80).

Twenty-third ranked Notre Dame captured the tame title with a 42-over score of 906 (317-300-289). Maryland (312-310-292=914) finished second followed by Coastal Carolina (305-304-307=916). The Chants edged out Big South rival and 35th-ranked Campbell (316-304-297=917), who placed fourth in the field. Indiana (315-307-296=918) and No. 46 East Carolina (317-306-298=921) rounded out the top six on the team leaderboard.

Notre Dame's Ashley Armstrong (74-71-72 =217) captured individual medalist honors by three strokes over runner-up Laura Wearn of Furman (77-76-67=220).

Coastal will be in action again April 5-7 at the Rebel Intercollegiate, hosted by Ole Miss. The event will be the Chanticleers' final tune-up before the Big South Conference Championship, which takes place April 14-16 in Ninety-Six, S.C.
