JOHNS ISLAND - Coastal Carolina led the 18-team Briar's Creek Invitational field after one round and remained atop the leaderboard as round two was suspended due to darkness on Monday night. Brittany Henderson paced the field after 18 holes with a 1-under 71 followed by Jessica Alexander in second with an even-par 72.
The Chanticleer contingent combined to card a 17-over 305 under blustery conditions at the par-72, 6.088-yard Golf Club at Briar's Creek. Fortieth-ranked Central Florida (307, +19) was second after the first round of play followed by Kansas (309, +21). Maryland (312, +24) and Indiana (315, +27) rounded out the top five after 18 holes of play. Big South rival and 35th-ranked Campbell stood sixth overall with a 28-over 316.
Henderson, ranked as the 90th-best individual in collegiate golf by Golfstat, opened her best round of the season with an eagle on the par-5, 430-yard 10th hole. She then played the extremely windy course even over the ensuing 10 holes before suffering a double-bogey on the third hole. However, the senior responded with five pars before closing her season-low tying round with a birdie on nine.
Alexander posted her sixth round of par of better on the campaign with her 72. She traded a birdie for a bogey over her first seven holes, but was hindered by a double-bogey and a bogey to close her first nine holes. The Lakeview, Fla., native then dropped in six straight pars before carding birdies on each of her final three holes.
Freshmen Lena Schaeffner and Marissa Hinchman fired matching 9-over scores of 81 to tie for 43rd in the 96-competitor field. Both finished their first time around the course with a birdie. Frida Castillo was 12-over after 18 holes with a score of 84, tying for 70th overall.
The teams will finish their second rounds on Tuesday morning, starting with an 8 a.m. shotgun start, followed by the final 18 holes of play.
