SAN DIEGO - The Coastal Carolina women's golf team improved six strokes over its day one score to shoot a 309 during the final round of The Battle at Rancho Bernardo Inn to finish the tournament tied for 13th.

Southern California, ranked third in the latest Golfstat poll, won the rain-shortened event after carding a 295 on the day to bring its 36-hole tally to 590. No. 8 Arizona (295-297 - 592) finished two strokes in back of the Trojans to claim runners-up honors. No. 13 Texas A&M (302-294 - 596) placed third followed by No. 19 California (303-294 - 597). No. 21 Pepperdine (302-300 - 602) and Tulane (293-309 - 602), the leader in the club house after round one, tied for fifth on the par-72 6,267-yard course. With their 13th-place finish, the Chanticleers (315-309 - 624) picked up victories over both No. 48 New Mexico and No. 42 and host San Diego State. In all, a total of 12 teams ranked in the Golfstat Top 50 poll were represented in the field.

Southern California's Sophia Popov took home individual medalist honors as she posted identical rounds of 71 to finish as the only member of the 90-competitor field to shoot under par.

Opening with a pair of pars, Jessica Alexander played the next three holes 4-over. However, the junior righted the ship and played her next seven holes 2-under with birdies on the 17th and third holes. Alexander would trade two birdies and a par for three bogeys over the remainder of the round to finish with a 3-over 75 and improve 11 places in the individual medalist standings to 26th (tied) place.

Kaitlin Higginbotham shaved a stroke off her round one total to card a 4-over 76 on the day and finish tied for 30th overall. After opening her round with a par and a birdie, Higginbotham overcame a double bogey on her third hole to sink 11 par putts, including seven straight at one point, against only three bogeys.

Junior Brittany Henderson also carded a double bogey, hers on the par-3 fourth, to finish with a 78 for the round and tied for 45th for the tournament. Two-over, which included a string of five consecutive pars, as she made the turn, Henderson continued to card pars until her double followed by two bogeys pushed her to the 6-over round.

Junior Eugenia Guerra shaved four strokes off her day one 84 to conclude Coastal's scoring as she finished the day at 8-over to tie for 77th overall. Guerra struggled early with a pair of sixes to open her round but rebounded to play even-par over the remainder of her front nine. The Nevada transfer then carded four bogeys over her next five holes before closing the round with a birdie and three straight pars.

Frida Castillo warped up the Chanticleer contingent with an 81 over her final 18 holes. The freshman used a birdie and 10 pars to also take four strokes off her first round effort.

Coastal will take the next few weeks to make final adjustments in preparation for its title defense at the Big South Conference Championships held from April 9-11 at The Patriot Club in Ninety-Six, S.C.
