AUGUSTA, GA. - The Coastal Carolina University women's golf team carded a 30-over 318, tying for sixth in the 14-team field after 18 holes of the GRU Augusta-hosted 3M Lady Jaguar Intercollegiate at the 6,214-yard, par-72 Forest Hills Golf Club.
Fourteenth-ranked Vanderbilt leads the event after firing an 11-over 299. No. 46 East Tennessee State (309), No. 48 Illinois (311), Mercer (312) and No. 41 Kansas (316) round out the top five. The Chants are tied with No. 34 GRU Augusta and Big South foe Campbell for sixth.
Sophomores Marissa Hinchman and Lena Schaeffner co-led the Chanticleers with matching 79s. The duo were two of 10 competitors to finish the opening round 7-over. Hinchman was 1-over at the turn, but ran into trouble on the third and fifth holes before closing her round with a birdie on the par-5 ninth hole. Schaeffner, who led the Chants with three birdies on the day, was 3-over through her first nine holes, but closed the round with back-to-back birdies.
Emee Herbert and Frida Castillo are tied for 30th on the individual leaderboard after posting 8-over first round scores of 80. Herbert, who like her fellow Chanticleers started on the back nine, struggled over her opening nine holes as she went out with a 43. However, the junior settled and played the front nine 1-over with a birdie on the par-3 seventh hole. Castillo shot 3-over on her front nine, despite birdies on holes 14 and 18. She bogeyed five of her final nine holes en route to her 80.
Courtney Boe rounded out the Coastal contingent with an 84 (+12). The senior turned in two birdies and five pars over the duration of the round.
The event will resume Saturday with 18 holes and conclude with 18 holes Sunday.
