PLEASANTON, Calif. - Jessica Alexander carded an even-par 72 over the first round of the Cal Classic to lead Coastal Carolina to a fifth-place standing at the 36-hole tournament played at the par-72, 6,304-yard Ruby Hill Golf Club.
Alexander is tied for fifth overall in the 60-competitor field. The senior teed off on the back nine and played her first nine holes at 2-under, posting birdies on 13th and 18th holes. She was saddled with an even-par round after bogeys on the par-3 third and sixth holes.
Arizona State, ranked 14th in the latest Golfstat poll, leads the tournament with an 8-over 296. No. 13 Stanford and No. 11 UC Davis are tied for second on the leaderboard with matching 10-over 298 scores. San Diego State is fourth with a 300 (+12) followed by Coastal Carolina's 13-over 301. No 39 California and No. 40 UNLV sit tied for sixth in the 11-team field after turning in 18-hole scores of 302 (+14).
Brittany Henderson posted the Chants' second-lowest score of the day with a 3-over 75, tying for 13th after one day of competition. Henderson carded four birdies on the day, a Chanticleer best, but was hindered by a triple bogey on the par-4, 386-yard first hole.
Newcomer Lena Schaeffner is tied for 17th after turning in a 4-over 76. Schaeffner finished her day with a pair of birdies and was one of only five competitors to score under par on the par-3, 173-yard third hole.
The Chants tee off on the final round of the Cal Classic on Tuesday starting at 8:30 a.m. PST.
