SORRENTO, Fla. - The Coastal Carolina women's golf team opened its 2012 spring season carding an opening round score of 303 to tie for 15th at the UCF Challenge, played at the Red Tail Golf Club.

Baylor, ranked No. 22 by Golfstat, leads the 18-team field, shooting a four-under par 284, followed by No. 3 Auburn (285) and Augusta State (286). Tulane (287) and No. 27 South Carolina (290) round out the current top five.

Junior Brittany Henderson leads the Chants through 18 holes, tying for fifth with a one-under 71. Henderson fired three birdies in the round against two bogeys, one of which came in her final hole of the day. Additionally, the Smiths Falls, Ontario native was one of only seven competitors to birdie the 406-yard par 4 eighth hole.

Kaitlin Higginbotham finished the round tied for 22nd after turning in a one-over 73. After opening her day with a bogey, the senior birdied three of the next five holes. However, a pair of bogey on the back nine led to her one-over score.

Jessica Alexander, the reigning Big South Golfer of the Year, carded a six-over 78 to tie for 80th overall after a round of play. Sophomore Courtney Boe and freshman Frida Castillo turned in identical scores of 81 and stand tied for 92nd place. Both Boe and Castillo birdied the par 5 473-yard seventh hole, but were undone by four and five bogeys on the back nine, respectively.

The Chanticleers will tee off on round two of the 54-hole tournament on Monday starting at 9:30 a.m.
