The Opening Tip
The Chants and the Spartans
Coastal Carolina and USC Upstate have met eight times on the hardwood with the first occurring in the Chants' inaugural season of 1974-75. The schools met seven times before the series was suspended after the 1985-86 season with the Spartans holding a commanding 6-1 record over Coastal. The series was resumed last season as the Chants claimed a 70-62 victory in Spartanburg despite an early injury to Sydnei Moss, Coastal’s eighth all-time leading scorer.

A Look At The Spartans
USC Upstate has struggled out of the gate to a 1-10 overall mark and a 0-2 record in Atlantic Sun play. The Spartan’s lone victory came in a 73-66 affair at Big South foe UNC Asheville. Upstate holds a 1-1 record against the Big South this season defeating Asheville and falling to Presbyterian (72-64).

The Spartans are averaging 52.6 points per game, but are surrendering 80.5 per contest. The squad is averaging 21.5 turnovers per game, while recording only 10.2 steals. Tee’Ara Copney is the only Spartan to start all 11 games as she averages a team-high 15.4 points per contest. Lauren McRoberts leads the team with 5.2 boards per game followed by Paulina Zaveckaite’s 4.8 rebounds.

Storylines
Cole Earns Second Big South Honor
Freshman Shatia Cole was tabbed The Crons Brand Big South Freshman of the Week for games played Dec. 13-19.

This is the second time this season Cole has earned the honor. The Myrtle Beach native joins Brooke Weisbrod (1997-98), Amanda Stull (2006-07), Lacey Lyons (2006-07) and Sydnei Moss (2007-08) as the only freshmen in Chanticleer history to garner multiple Big South Freshman of the Week accolades.

Cole, making her second collegiate start, put in 13 points and dished out five helpers for the Chanticleers against South Carolina State. She connected on 67 percent of her shots from the floor, including one from 3-point land. Cole also pulled down one board and came away with three steals in the narrow 61-59 loss.

Through eight games the Chanticleers have dominated both the offensive and defensive glass. The Chants’ 18.38 offensive boards per game ranks fourth in the Big South while their 25.13 defensive boards rank fifth. Moreover, Coastal’s +8.1 rebounding margin ranks second in the conference and 25th in the NCAA.
