Chants Close Non-conference Schedule Wednesday
CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina women's basketball team returns to the HTC Center Wednesday night to play its final non-conference game of the season against Wofford. Tip-off is scheduled 6 p.m.
Last Time Out
Coastal fell, 69-57, to No. 23 Syracuse in the Carolinas Challenge at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center on Sunday night. Coastal fought back from a double-digit deficit to trail by just three points in the fourth quarter, but Syracuse pulled away for the victory by scoring seven unanswered points in the game's final minutes.
Jas Adams scored 18 points for the Chants, her ninth time this season finishing in double figures. DJ Williams recorded her second double-double of the year with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Williams also led Coastal with five assists.
Wednesday marks the 11th all-time meeting between Coastal and Wofford. The Chants had been unbeaten through the first nine games of the series before Wofford won its first game against Coastal, 67-62, last season in Spartanburg.
Coastal has won all five games against Wofford played in Conway, including the lone game of the series played in the HTC Center during the 2015-16 season. The Chants prevailed 83-69 on that occasion.
Adams Stays Hot
Jas Adams leads Coastal and the Sun Belt Conference averaging 18.6 ppg. The senior guard has scored in double figures in all but one game this year, with her season low of nine points coming against College of Charleston on Nov. 30.
Adams entered the season with a career high of 23 points in a game, but scored 25 versus UNC Wilmington (Nov. 18), 28 versus Nebraska (Nov. 24) and 29 versus Fort Wayne (Dec. 4).
Adams opened the season by scoring in double figures in six straight games, the longest such streak of her career. Her previous long was three games.
Naheria Hamilton currently ranks second in the Sun Belt and 38th nationally averaging 2.2 blocks per game. The 6-4 sophomore guard has multiple blocks in six games this season, including a season high of five blocks against UNC Wilmington on Nov. 18.
Wofford enters Wednesday's contest with a 5-6 overall record. The Terriers average 69 ppg while shooting 39 percent from the field, 31 percent from beyond the arc and 75 percent at the line. They also haul in 40 rebounds per game, and dish out 13 assists on average.
Wofford has been without its leading scorer, Chloe Wanink, since she injured her knee in the Nov. 30 game against UNC Asheville. Through the first seven games of the season, Wanink was averaging 22.1 ppg while Wofford went 4-3. Without Wanink, Wofford has won one of four games, including losses in each of its last two against UNC Wilmington (Dec. 16) and College of Charleston (59-51).
Cairo Booker now leads Wofford averaging 12.1 ppg, followed by Da'Ja Green's 10.4 ppg. Marissa Bayer (5.7 rpg), Green (5.5 rpg) and Booker (5.2 rpg) pace the Terriers on the boards.
