GREENSBORO, N.C. In a game that featured 10 ties and nine lead changes, UNC Greensboro (5-3) scored 10 of the last 11 points to defeat the Coastal Carolina University womens basketball team (5-3) 64-54 Dec. 16 in Greensboro, N.C. Senior Alisha Dill (Johnson City, Tenn./Science Hill) scored 27 points for the Lady Chanticleers, including hitting five three pointers.
Coastal hit its first four shots of the game to take an 8-4 lead, but a 9-0 run by the Spartans made it 13-8 Greensboro with 14:01 remaining. A jumper from junior Victoria Blanchard (Eutawville, S.C./Walters State C.C.) and a three from senior Calisha Yates (Columbus, Ind./Chattanooga State C.C.) tied the game at 13 at the 11:24 mark. UNCG scored the next four points on free throws, but Coastal would eventually take a 23-21 lead at 5:34 on a three from Dill. Two jumper from UNCGs Brittany Frazier gave the Spartans a 25-23 lead, but freshman Devin Rivers (Miami, Fla./Felix Varela) hit a layup that made it 25 all with 3:09 left. The fifth tie of the half came as Dill hit a three pointer to deadlock it with 1:23 left. Meghan Chamberlains jumper at the one-minute mark made it 30-28 at the break.
Both teams shot 12-for-28 from the floor in the first half. Dill had 10 first-half points, while freshman Amanda Stull (Rushville, Ind./Rushville Consolidated) had four rebounds and three steals. For UNCG, Jasmine Byrd had seven points and Irene Otamiri had four rebounds.
Coastal was down by four (34-30) at the 17:56 mark, but a 6-0 run by Coastal capped by a three from Dill gave the Lady Chants a 36-34 advantage. Stulls jumper at 11:46 gave CCU a 38-36 lead at 11:46, but five straight points from UNCG gave the Spartans a three-point advantage. Coastal would retake the lead at 6:25 on a Dill three and had its last lead at 5:17 on another three from Dill. Four free throws from the Spartans gave UNCG a 52-49 lead, but a jumper from senior Vanessa Laug (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) at 4:03 cut the lead to one. UNCGs KaLeah Latham hit two free throws to extend the lead to three at 3:45, but Dills jumper at 2:56 brought it back to 54-53. At 2:38, Byrd hit the first of her two free throws. She missed the second, but Latham gathered the rebound and made the layup, extending the lead to 57-53. Then on UNCGs next possession, Kristen Boone tried a 35-footer with the shot clock expiring. It hit the rim and Kemena Brooks grabbed the rebound and scored, making it 59-53 UNCG. A Boone layup and three free throws iced the game for the Spartans.
Dill was 9-of-22 from the floor and had four rebounds and three blocks. She also upped her scoring average to 24.8 points per game. Junior C.J. Ware (Decatur, Ga./Lakeside) had eight rebounds and four assists, while Stull had five rebounds and three assists. For the game, the Lady Chanticleers shot 34.5 percent from the floor, compared to 39 percent for the Spartans.
UNCG was led by Lathams 17 points, while Byrd added 11. UNCG outrebounded Coastal 47-32.
Coastal will face second-ranked North Carolina Monday, Dec. 18 at 6 p.m., in the Myrtle Beach Convention Center. The game is part of the Bojangles Basketball Bash and the Coastal men will face the College of Charleston after the womens game.
