Women's Basketball Falls to #5/7 North Carolina 94-52

The fifth-ranked University of North Carolina (8-1) had all five starters in double figures in defeating the Coastal Carolina University women’s basketball team (2-3) 94-52 Dec. 12, in Chapel Hill, N.C. The Lady Chanticleers had a career high 16 points from junior Demaria Young (Memphis, Tenn./Walters State C.C.), but Coastal shot 33.9 percent and committed 30 turnovers.

Coastal had its only lead at 18:52 on a three-pointer from senior Courtney Brown (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch), but North Carolina had a double-digit lead at 12:03 on two free throws from LaToya Pringle. A field goal from Brown at 7:58 kept the UNC lead to 26-14, but the Tar Heels went on a 20-4 run that was capped by a three-pointer from Ivory Latta. The Tar Heels took a 46-24 halftime lead, shooting 57.6 percent from the field.

The closest the Lady Chanticleers came in the second half was 60-40 at the 12:47 mark after a layup from junior Jasmine Tyler (Jacksonville, Fla./Okalossa C.C.) and a three from Young. North Carolina outscored the Lady Chants 48-28 in the second half and went 14-of-19 from the free-throw line.

Coastal was led by Young’s 16 points, while sophomore Alisha Dill (Johnson City, Tenn./Science Hill) added 12. Young had three three-pointers for nine points. Junior Kim Turner (West Memphis, Ark./Hiwassee C.C) led Coastal with seven rebounds, while Dill had four assists.

Camille Little led North Carolina with 18 points, while Erlana Larkins added 17. La’Tangela Atkinson had a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds. North Carolina outrebounded Coastal 43-29 and had 25 steals, led by Little’s six.

Coastal returns to Kimbel Arena Thursday, Dec. 16, at 7 p.m., against Savannah State University.
