Women's Basketball Suffers 60-55 Setback at Furman

Greenville, S.C.- The Coastal Carolina Women’s basketball team suffered a last minute 60-55 loss at Furman on Saturday, Dec. 2. The loss places the Lady Chanticleers at a 3-2 record on the 2006-07 season.

The Lady Chants went into the half with the 32-25 lead off thanks to 15 points from senior guard Alisha Dill (Johnson City, Tenn./Science Hill). The two teams remained close in score to each other throughout the entire first half with the largest lead being 7 at the half. Furman was led by Chrissy Phelps who had nine points. Furman shot 55.6 percent from the free throw line and 38.5 percent overall while Coastal shot 48 percent from the floor and 57.1 percent from both the free throw line and behind the arch. Freshman Lacey Lyons (Beverly Hills, Fla./Crystal River) also chipped in eight points for the Lady Chanticleers.

The Lady Chants came out after the half and pushed the lead to 10 before Furman scored six quick points to put the score at 42-35. However, Furman’s Courtney Opie sparked the Paladin offense helping her team pull within five before scoring four more points to take the lead. Opie scored 10 points in the second half and Phelps added 11 to maintain the lead and get the win for Furman 60-55. Coastal was led by Dill who had 12 points and Calisha Yates (Columbus, Ind./East (Chattanooga State C.C.)) who put in five. As a team, Coastal shot 33.3 percent from the floor and 66.7 percent on the free throw line in the second half. Furman had a 34.8 shooting percentage and shot 81.8 from the foul line.

Dill ended the night with season-high 27 points. She was 10-20 from the foul line and had three assists with two steals. Yates ended the night with seven points. As a team, the Lady Chants shot 40.4 percent from the floor and 61.5 percent from the foul line. They also shot 35.7 percent from behind the arch. Furman ended the night shooting 36.7 percent, 74.2 percent from the free throw line. They ended the game with a 14.3 shooting percentage from behind the arch, sinking all their threes in the second half. The Paladins were led by Phelps who ended the night with 20 points and six steals. Opie also put in 13 points, being 7-8 from the free throw line. Lee Stephens chipped in six points with two steals.

The Lady Chanticleers will start an eight day break as the team takes finals before they are back in action on Monday, December 11 against Campbell in Kimbel Arena. The tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
