Merrill added 23 points and 10 rebounds for the 12th double-double of her career, while Carolyn Alexander had 14 and Micah Harvey 10 for the Bearcats.
Nikki Reddick led Coastal Carolina with a season high 25, while Courtney Brown added 12.Reddick opened the contest by canning a three-pointer to push the Lady Chanticleers to a 3-0 lead, but back-to-back baskets by Merrill and Alexander gave Cincinnati its first lead of the contest. After Reddick hit another triple, the Bearcats ripped off a 10-0 run to force a Coastal Carolina timeout with 14:58 remaining. King sparked the run with a pair of treys, while Merrill and Brittani Young added buckets for the Bearcats.
Merrill scored Cincinnati's next six points as the Bearcats built their lead to nine at 20-11 with 10:36 left before the half. Reddick and Lucia Popovici kept the Lady Chanticleers close with two baskets apiece, before three straight Alexander scores gave the Bearcats a 13-point edge with just over seven minutes left.
The Bearcats hit a bit of an offensive stall over the final six minutes of the half, as a pair of free throws each by Sharp and Alexander and a three by Merelenea Dozier were the only Cincinnati points.
The Lady Chanticleers also struggled offensively, as they produced just nine points in the final seven minutes of the half. Reddick continued to pace CCU with two more baskets, to finish the first half with a game-high 12 points.
For Cincinnati, Alexander and Merrill led the charge in the first half with 10 points each. After canning her pair of treys back-to-back, King sat down with just six points in seven minutes of playing time. The Bearcats held the edge statistically, outshooting Coastal Carolina .433 to .417 and holding an 18-13 advantage on the boards.
Coastal Carolina opened the second half scoring the first four points to cut their deficit to seven and also took advantage of the Bearcat scoring drought that carried until 17:55 remained on a lay-up by Merrill. After a Brown basket made it 40-31, the Bearcats responded with the game's next five points on a trey by King and two Merrill free throws.
Crystal Brown's basket made it 50-38, but it would be the last Lady Chanticleers score for over five minutes, as Cincinnati erupted on their 24-0 run. King was lethal during the stretch, connecting on four three-pointers and adding two more baskets during the run.
After the run, Coastal Carolina scored 12 of the next 18 points, behind six points by Courtney Brown and five by Reddick to cut the score to 85-52 with less than three minutes left in the contest. Down the stretch, the Bearcat reserves got into the act scoring seven of the last nine points to close out the game. Included in the late run was the first collegiate basket by redshirt freshman Edwina Williams. After a 11-day exam break, the Lady Chants return to the floor on Wednesday, Dec. 18 at 5 p.m. against East Tennessee State in Kimbel Arena.
