Women's Basketball Wins Sixth in a Row with a 61-54 Victory over Campbell

The Coastal Carolina University women’s basketball team (6-0) went on an 8-0 run to end the first half and never trailed in second to defeat Campbell (4-3) 61-54 Nov. 27 in Buies Creek, N.C. Coastal now has won its sixth straight game to open the 2007-08 campaign.
Coastal jumped out to an 8-5 lead on a three from sophomore Lacey Lyons (Beverly Hills, Fla./Crystal River) at 14:13 and had two five-point leads in the first half, the latest at 11:25 on a layup from senior C.J. Ware (Decatur, Ga./Lakeside). Campbell would tie the score at 15 with 6:26 left on a Gara Bell layup and would go up 19-15 on a free throw from Marlena Murphy. Coastal would then go on its run to end the first half. Senior Vicky Blanchard (Eutawville, S.C./Holly Hill-Roberts (Walters State C.C.)) hit one-of-two free throws at 1:31. Freshman Courtney Grambley (Morrow, Ohio/Little Miami) then made an old-fashion three-point play with 57 seconds remaining to tie the game at 19. Blanchard hit a jumper with 23 seconds left to give Coastal a two-point lead. Freshman Sydnei Moss (North Augusta, S.C./North Augusta) was fouled shooting a three with one second left, and she made two free throws to give the Lady Chants a four-point lead.
Maggie Rich cut the lead to one to open the second half, but Coastal would extend the lead to seven on a Moss layup at 15:39. Coastal would extend the lead to 11 on a Lyons jumper at 11:02 and a three from Lyons put Coastal up 42-30 with 10:29 left. Campbell would cut the lead to seven on two occasions, but Coastal made four free throws in the final minute to preserve the win.
Lyons led Coastal with 16 points, including four three-pointers. Ware added 15 points and was 6-of-8 from the free-throw line. Moss had nine points and seven rebounds, while sophomore Devin Rivers (Miami, Fla./Felix Varela) had a team-high eight rebounds.
For Campbell, Maggie Rich had 17 points and Marlena Murphy had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Coastal forced Campbell into 19 turnovers and hit seven three-pointers. Coastal has now won 10 of its last 11 contests against the Lady Camels.
Coastal will host Converse Saturday, Dec. 1 at 2 p.m.
