The Coastal Carolina University womens basketball team (2-1) shot 25 percent from the field and could not overcome an early double-digit deficit in falling to IPFW (3-1) 60-49 Nov. 25 in the first round of the Ball State Federal Credit Union Thanksgiving Tournament in Muncie, Ind.
IPFW came right out and made layups on its first two possessions, forcing the Lady Chanticleers to call an early timeout. The Mastodons made it 9-2 at 17:09 on a jumper from Nan Moore and at 13:52, it became 14-4 on a layup from Tina Moen. A three from freshman Lacey Lyons (Beverly Hills, Fla./Crystal River) at 13:38 cut the lead to 15-7, but a 6-0 IPFW run was capped by a jumper from Johnna Lewis-Carlisle at 12:19. The deficit was as close at 25-18 at 7:48 when junior C.J. Ware (Decatur, Ga./Lakeside) hit a three pointer. Moore came right back and made a three and a Moen jumper put it at 30-18 at 5:23. Coastal scored the last three points of the half and went to the lockerroom down 30-21.
Ware led CCU with seven first-half points, with senior Calisha Yates (Columbus, Ind./Chattanooga State C.C.) grabbing six rebounds. Coastal shot just 23.3 percent in the first half and went 2-for-9 from three-point range. Lewis-Carlisle and Moore had seven points apiece in the first 20 minutes.
IPFW came out strong in the second half, building the lead to 15 points on a Lewis-Carlisle three at 14:33. After a three-pointer by Ashley Johnson made it 48-34 at 8:24, Coastal went on a 5-0 run which was capped by two free throws from senior Alisha Dill (Johnson City, Tenn./Science Hill). Coastal cut the lead to six at 49-43 with two Dill free throws at 4:50 and had offensive possessions with the six-point deficit, but could not score. Layups by Juliane Hohne and Suzanne Edwards got the lead back to double digits and Coastal would get no closer than eight points the rest of the way.
Dill led Coastal with 16 points, but was 3-of-27 from the field. Dill was 10-of-11 from the free-throw line. Ware had 11 points, a career high, and four rebounds and Yates scored seven points and collected six rebounds.
IPFW was led by Lewis-Carlisle with 16 points. Johnson had 14 points, while Edwards grabbed eight rebounds.
The two teams had 42 rebounds apiece and 22 of those for the Lady Chants were offensive. IPFW also had eight blocked shots, four of which came from Hohne.
Coastal will now face Howard in the consolation game Sunday, Nov. 26 at 1 p.m.
