BUIES CREEK, N.C.- The Coastal Carolina University womens basketball team (2-0) forced Campbell University (0-2) into 22 turnovers and scored 18 points off Lady Camels miscues as the Lady Chants opened their road schedule with a 66-43 win over the Lady Camels Nov. 24, in Buies Creek, N.C.
Campbell held its only lead of the game in the opening minute on a Kristal Troy jumper, but senior Nikki Reddicks (Hartsville, S.C./Hartsville) layup and senior Whitney Shearers (Monticello, Ky./Wayne County) jumper at 16:37 gave Coastal a lead they would never relinquish. Coastal went on a 7-0 run in two minutes, capped off by a three-pointer from Reddick. The Lady Chants led by as many as 15 points on two different occasions, before Campbell cut the lead to nine at halftime.
Coastal shot 48.3 percent in the second half as a Reddick three made the score 45-26 with 13:11 remaining. Campbell would get no closer than 12 points the rest of the way as the final margin of 23 points was the widest of the night.
Reddick led the Lady Chants in scoring with 19 points, going 7-of-15 from the field including three from beyond three-point range. Shearer was the other Coastal player in double figures with 10 points. Senior Crystal Brown (Mineral Wells, W.Va./Parkersburg South) led Coastal in rebounding with seven caroms. Reddick and senior Temecca Barnes (Malone, Fla./Chipola J.C.) added five rebounds. Reddick also had five steals on the night.
The Lady Chants shot 42.9 percent (24-of-56) from the field and connected on four three pointers. Coastal outrebounded Campbell 39-38 and had 13 steals, compared to three for the Lady Camels.
This was the sixth straight time that Coastal had defeated Campbell in the series and the second straight 20-plus point victory.
LaToya Armstrong led the Lady Camels with nine points. Campbells Jennifer Martin led everybody with 12 rebounds.
Coastal returns to Kimbel Arena Friday, Nov. 28, against Wofford College. Game time is at 7 p.m.
