Women's Basketball Gets First Win of the Year, 59-48, over Campbell

Junior Jasmine Tyler (Jacksonville, Fla./Okaloosa C.C.) had 13 points and nine rebounds and the Coastal Carolina University women’s basketball team (1-1) had a 17-5 run to open the second half in defeating Campbell University (0-2) 59-48 Nov. 23 in Conway, S.C.

The game had three ties in the first eight minutes, but Coastal had a 10-2 run that was capped by a free throw from senior Lucia Popovici (Edmonton, Alberta/Jasper Place) at 8:19. Coastal would then go eight minutes without a field goal and when Kristin Vuckovich hit a three pointer with 1:52 left, CCU trailed 24-23. The Lady Camels extended the lead to three on two Maggie Rich free throws. Junior Kristy Yurichak (Walton Hills, Ohio/Lakeland C.C.) hit a jumper with five seconds left to cut the lead to one, 26-25 at the half.

Tyler had eight first-half points to lead the Lady Chanticleers, while Dasha Green and Jennifer Lodge had six points apiece to lead the Lady Camels. Coastal shot 41.7 percent from the field, but connected on only 4-of-13 attempts from the free-throw line.

Junior Demaria Young (Memphis, Tenn./Walters State C.C.) hit a three-pointer at 18:10, giving Coastal a lead it would never relinquish. Coastal scored nine straight points starting with a Tyler free throw at 14:14 and ending on a layup by sophomore Alisha Dill (Johnson City, Tenn./Science Hill) at 12:04. Campbell cut the lead to four on a layup from Kenda Damman at 5:01, but senior Courtney Brown (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) drilled a three to put Coastal back up by seven. Tyler sealed the deal on a fast break layup with 53 seconds left.

Tyler also led the Lady Chants with four assists and four steals. Brown was Coastal’s other double-figure scorer with 11 points. Junior Amber Rose (Bloomington Springs, Tenn./Upperman) and Young added eight points.

Vuckovich had 12 points for Campbell, while Green had eight points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

Coastal forced Campbell into 30 turnovers and scored 35 points off of Lady Camel miscues.

Coastal will be at home Tuesday, Nov. 30, against UNC Wilmington. Game time is at 7 p.m., in Kimbel Arena. Campbell faces Stetson at home Dec. 2 at 7 p.m.
