Women's Basketball Starts the Season with a 57-42 Win over Campbell

The Coastal Carolina University womens basketball team (1-0) opened the 2005-06 season on a high note as the Lady Chanticleers defeated Campbell University (0-3) 57-42 Nov. 22 in Buies Creek, N.C. Coastal forced Campbell into 28 turnovers and CCU had three players score in double figures.
Both teams started off slowly as senior Kim Turners (West Memphis, Ark./Hiwassee C.C.) layup at 17:12 was the first points of the game. The Lady Chants jumped out to a nine-point lead at 12:42 on a three-point play from junior Alisha Dill (Johnson City, Tenn./Science Hill) and got the lead to double digits (18-7) on senior Jasmine Tylers (Jacksonville, Fla./Okaloosa C.C.) jumper at 10:46. The lead was as high at 13 at 8:07 on a Tyler layup, but the Lady Camels cut the advantage to six (24-18) at 2:36 on a three-pointer from Tomika Tomlinson. Tylers two free throws with 10 seconds left gave CCU the 28-18 halftime lead.
Coastal shot 10-of-29 (34.5 percent) in the first half and was 7-of-9 from the free-throw line. Tyler led the team with eight first-half points, while Young had eight rebounds in the first 20 minutes. Campbell was saddled with 16 turnovers in the first half, with Jennifer Lodge leading the way with seven points.
Junior Calisha Yates (Columbus, Ind./Chattanooga State C.C.), who sat most of the first half with foul trouble, opened the second-half scoring with a three, giving CCU an 11-point lead. The Lady Camels then came back with a five-point run, as an Amber Graham three at 16:42 made the score 31-25. The lead was six at 13:28, but that would be as close as Campbell would get. At 7:23, a Turner free throw made it 44-34 and the lead would grow to 17 (51-34) at 4:45 on another Yates three pointer. Sophomore C.J. Ware (Decatur, Ga./Lakeside) made four free throws late to ice the game.
Turner led CCU with 13 points, going 6-of-11 from the field. She also had seven rebounds and three steals. Tyler came off the bench for 11 points, while Yates added 10. Young led all players in rebounds with nine, while Dill had five points and a game-high six assists.
Coastal copied its first half, going 10-of-29 in the second half. The Lady Chants went 13-of-17 from the line, outrebounded Campbell 40-32 and had 13 steals.
For Campbell, Lodge had 11 points and five boards and Amber Graham had eight rebounds to go along with five points.
Coastal opens its home schedule Friday, Nov. 25 against Southern Virginia University. Game time at Kimbel Arena is at 7 p.m.
NOTES: Coastal is now 7-2 in season openers under head coach Alan LeForce... After scoring 23 points against UNC Asheville, Coastal held Letitia Dickson to two points in 15 minutes... The nine rebounds by Young was one off a career high... Yates and sophomore Joanna Pekonen (Lappeenranta, Finland/Lafayette) played their first game in a CCU uniform against Campbell. Yates had 10 points and three steals, while Pekonen had two rebounds and a block in 14 minutes... Coastal had a 16-8 edge in offensive rebounds... Coastal has now won seven of the last eight games vs. the Lady Camels.
