CONWAY, S.C.- The Coastal Carolina University womens basketball team (1-0) opened the 2003-04 season in style as the Lady Chants had three players in double figures in a 76-48 win over Anderson College (0-1) Nov. 21, in Conway, S.C.
Coastal jumped out to a 7-0 lead and never looked back as the Lady Chants led by as many as 23 points in the first half. Senior Nikki Reddick (Hartsville, S.C./Hartsville) scored 11 points in the first 20 minutes, going 5-of-10 from the field. Junior Courtney Brown (Cheasapeake, Va./Western Branch) added seven points and five rebounds, while senior Crystal Brown (Mineral Wells, W.Va./Parkersburg South) pulled down nine rebounds.
Coastal then padded its lead in the second half and had a lead as many at 35 on two occasions. Coastal shot 45.9 percent from the field and went a perfect 5-of-5 from the line in the second frame.
Courtney Brown led the Lady Chants with 16 points and nine rebounds. Reddick added 15 points, three assists and four rebounds and Crystal Brown scored 11 points and pulled down nine rebounds.
Coastal shot 44 percent from the field and hit on four three-point field goals. The Lady Chants forced Anderson into 26 turnovers and outrebounded the Trojans 48-36.
Coastal also scored 50 points in the paint and scored 41 points from the bench. Freshman Alisha Dill (Johnson City, Tenn./Science Hill) and sophomore Amber Rose (Baxter, Tenn./Upperman) scored nine and eight points, respectively.
Anderson was led by Stephanie Ponds with 15 points and eight rebounds. Deidra Langston also had 10 points.
The Lady Chants travel to Buies Creek, N.C., to face Campbell University Monday, Nov. 24, at 7 p.m.
