Coastal Carolina women's basketball team picked up its first road win of the season on Saturday, Nov. 17 with a 51-41 victory over Stetson at Edmunds Center in DeLand, Fla.
A solid Coastal defense kept Stetson off the scoreboard for the first five minutes and allowed the Lady Chanticleers to enjoy an opening 8-0 run. However, Stetson responded with a 12-2 run in order to take the 12-10 lead with 11:14 to go in the half. Both teams were held scoreless until Shayna Swinson connected on a free-throw at 6:32 to push Stetson's lead to three. Coastal did not trail for much longer as freshman Jessica Noll (Myrtle Beach, S.C./St. James) jumpstarted the Lady Chant offense with a three-pointer at 6:16 that evened the score at 13-13. Sophomore Devin Rivers (Miami, Fla./Felix Varela) connected on a free throw at 5:04 to give Coastal the lead for the remainder of the half. The Lady Chants outscored Stetson 12-4 in the final 4:34 of the half in order to take a 26-17 lead heading into the locker room.
Noll and senior C.J. Ware (Decatur, Ga./Lakeside) led Coastal with six points each going into halftime. Noll sank two three-pointers, while Ware was 4-for-4 from the free throw line and had a lay-up/jumper.
The momentum of Coastal's offense continued through the first part of the second half as the Lady Chants outscored Stetson 19-7 to take a 45-24 lead with 9:03 to go. But Stetson slowly chipped away at Coastal's 21-point lead beginning with a lay-up/jumper by Shayna Swinson at 8:48 that broke Stetson's 5:16 scoreless streak. The Hatters got another two points off a lay-up/jumper by Ayesha Barkley, but sophomore Amanda Stull (Rushville, Ind./Rushville Consolidated) calmly sank a pair of free throws at 7:55 to give Coastal the 47-28 advantage. However, the Hatters defense kept Coastal scoreless for 5:05, while the offense had an eight-point run to make it a 47-36 game still in favor of Coastal. Rivers ended the Coastal's scoring drought with a jumper at 2:50. Meanwhile, Ware added a pair of free throws from the charity stripe a minute later. Stetson would score the final five points of the game in a span of 1:24 with a jumper from Jessica Connor and a three-pointer from Brittany Carannante.
Ware scored a team-high 10 points, going 6-for-6 from the free throw line. Ware and classmate Vicky Blanchard (Eutawville, S.C./Holly Hill-Roberts (Walters State C.C.) led Coastal in rebounding with six a piece. As a team, Coastal shot 36.2 percent from the floor, connecting on 17 of 47 shots.
Carannante led Stetson with 11 points, while Swinson had eight rebounds. Stetson shot 31.5 percent from the floor, making 17 of 54 shots.
Coastal returns to Kimbel Arena Tuesday, Nov. 20 when the Lady Chants host South Carolina State. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
