Women's Basketball Opens Season with 70-56 Win over the College of Charleston

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Senior Alisha Dill (Johnson City, Tenn./Science Hill) scored 26 points, one off a career high, to help the Coastal Carolina University women’s basketball team (1-0) to a 70-56 win over the College of Charleston (1-2) Nov. 16 in Charleston, S.C.

Coastal shot 43.3 percent in the first half as the Lady Chanticleers built a 33-21 haltime lead. The College of Charleston had its only lead of the game on a Nikki Williams layup at 17:05 to make it 3-2 Cougars. A Dill jumper at 12:50 made it 12-6 Coastal and the Lady Chants extended the lead to 10 at 19-9 on a three pointer by junior Victoria Blanchard (Holly Hill, S.C./Holly Hill-Roberts) at 9:14. The College of Charleston cut the lead to seven at 6:24 on a three pointer by Christina Williams, but five points by Dill made it 26-15 with 3:34 left. Freshman Lacey Lyons (Beverly Hills, Fla./Crystal River) hit a three to make it 31-19 at the 1:29 mark and a Dill layup with four seconds left gave Coastal the 33-21 halftime lead.

Dill had 11 points at the break, with Blanchard scoring seven first-half points. Senior Calisha Yates (Columbus, Ind./Chattanooga State C.C.) led the team with four rebounds and three steals. For the College of Charleston, Nikki Williams, Christina Williams and Deidra Jones had five points apiece.

A Yates three pointer at 17:24 gave the Lady Chants a 36-23 lead, but the Cougars cut the lead to seven at 13:54 on a Sarah Moye jumper. A three-point play by Dill brought the margin back out to 10 and freshman Amanda Stull’s (Rushville, Ind./Rushville Consolidated) jumper at 12:28 made it 43-31 Coastal. The lead would swell to as much as 16 points
(55-39) on a Yates three at 6:39, but C of C made a 7-0 run to bring the lead back to nine points. Lyons hit a three at 5:32 to stop the rally and the lead would never get below double digits the rest of the contest.

Dill scored over 20 points for the fourth time in her career to lead Coastal. She went 8-of-19 from the field and 8-of-9 from the free-throw line. Yates had 14 points, going 6-of-11 from the field. Coastal shot 51 percent from the field, including 7-of-15 from three-point range, and was 13-of-21 in the second half. Yates led CCU with six boards while she shared the steals lead with Stull.

For C of C, Melissa Chambers had 14 points and Jones finished with 11. Nikki Williams led all players with seven rebounds.

Coastal will open its home schedule Monday, Nov. 20 against Southern Virginia. Game time is at 6 p.m., in Kimbel Arena and can be heard on www.GoCCUSports.com.

NOTES: Coastal has now won two in a row over the College of Charleston, while trailing in the overall series 30-9... Dill, Yates and Lyons had two three-pointers apiece... Four players, Stull, Blanchard, Lyons and Devin Rivers (Miami, Fla./Felix Varela), made their first appearances for Coastal in the win. The four combined for 21 points and eight rebounds... Senior Vanessa Laug (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) made her second career start and had four points and five rebounds... Coastal improved to 16-17 in season openers and have won eight of its last nine openers.
