CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) - Women's basketball freshman Shatia Cole has made an immediate impact in her first two games in a Chanticleer uniform. For her efforts in victories over Southern Virginia and College of Charleston, she was tabbed The Crons Brand Big South Freshman of the Week for games played the opening week of the 2011-12 season.
Cole, a guard from Myrtle Beach, S.C., averaged 14.0 points and 53 percent from the floor to help her squad to a 2-0 record last week. She got her college career started with 19 points on 60 percent from the field and added 4-of-5 from downtown and three from the line in the win over Southern Virginia on Nov. 11. Cole also dished out eight helpers and came away with six steals against the Knights. Three days later against the College of Charleston, Cole put in nine points on 4-of-9 from the floor and one from long range, to go along with two boards, two steals and one assist.
The Chanticleers, who have opened the season with a 2-0 mark for the seventh consecutive season, return to the hardwood on Saturday, Nov. 19 as hosts to St. Andrews. The opening tip inside Kimbel Arena is slated for 2 p.m.
