CONWAY- The Coastal Carolina women’s basketball team will take to the road for the first of three consecutive away games on Tuesday, Nov. 16 at the College of Charleston. Tip-off for the game is set for 5 p.m. at Carolina First Arena.
Dominating Performance
Coastal Carolina easily dispatched the Southern Virginia Knights 66-27 in the team’s season opener. The opening win was the 12th straight for the Chants and 12th under head coach Alan LeForce. The win improved Coastal to 6-0 all-time against Southern Virginia and continued the streak of not allowing the Knights to break the 50 point barrier.
Welcome to the Club Sydnei
Senior forward Sydnei Moss may have only scored 8 points in the season opener, but it was her third and fourth point that pushed her over a career milestone and into the Coastal Carolina history books. Moss’ fast-break layup with 1:09 remaining in the first half accounted for her 1,000 and 1,001 points in her collegiate career. Moss is now the 11th member of the 1,000 point club in Coastal Carolina history.
I Love College
All five of Coastal’s freshmen made their career debuts in the season opener as they combined for 23 points. Shanika Maddox was in the starting lineup and pulled down seven boards in the contest. Kayla Cook made the most of her 15 minutes off the bench as she tied for a game high 11 points. Alexx Puckett put nine points on the board as she went 4-6 from the floor. Angelica Henry had three points and a rebound while Katelyn Connor got on the score sheet with a rebound and an assist on the night.
Sharp Shooting
Senior forward Jessica Noll had the hot hand from behind the arc for the Chants as she was responsible for all of Coastal’s three pointers. Noll was an impressive 3-4 from deep as she dropped in all nine of her points in a 1:38 span in the second half.
Pick Pockets
The Chanticleers shined on the defensive end of the floor as the team combined to force 35 Southern Virginia turnovers in the game. The 35 turnovers were the most forced by Coastal since the 51 they forced against Southern Virginia in last season’s meeting.
May LeForce Be With You
Head coach Alan LeForce enters his 14th season at the helm of the Chanticleers. LeForce comes into the season sporting a 192-177 record at Coastal and a 432-357 career record. LeForce is the only coach in NCAA Division I history to win 100+ games on both the men’s and women’s side.
College of Charleston cougars
The College of Charleston Cougars enter the contest with a 1-1 record after the first weekend of the season. CofC lost its season opener 73-36 at N.C. State and defeated Big South Conference member Liberty 49-46 behind 19 points from Tonia Gerty.
Syd- The Kid
Senior Sydnei Moss is three points shy of becoming the 11th member of the 1,000 point club in Coastal Carolina history. Moss averaged 15.4 ppg last season earning second team All-Big South honors along the way. This season Moss has been named to the preseason All-Big South team. Moss also recorded five double-doubles during the 2009-10 campaign.
Oh Captain, My Captain
The 2010-11 Chants will be led by five seniors Katie Ahaus, Sydnei Moss, Katie White, Jessica Noll, and Lauren Grochowski. Moss, White, and Noll are entering their fourth year at Coastal, while Grochowski is a fifth year senior after taking a medical red-shirt during the 2006-07 season and Ahaus is in her second after transferring from Vincennes University.
Chanticleers in Season Openers
Coastal Carolina is 19-17 all-time in season openers and has won all of its last 11 lid lifters. Under Head Coach Alan LeForce, Coastal Carolina is 11-2 in season openers. Last season, the Chanticleers beat Southern Virginia by a wide 89-20 margin. Former standout Amanda Stull led all scores with 19 in the contest.
Rejection- Over and Over Again
Senior Katie White enters the season as one of the most prominent shot blockers in Big South Conference history. White currently ranks ninth all-time in the conference with 142 career blocks after posting a 54 last season. Her 2.3 blocks per game as a junior ranked 22nd in the NCAA, second in the Big South, and third on the Coastal Carolina single season list.
New Faces
The Chanticleers welcome six newcomers as five freshmen and a junior college transfer will make their debuts for Coastal this season. Kira Carter will be looked at for an immediate impact as she averaged 16.7 points per game last season at Wabash Valley College. Freshmen Kayla Cook, Katelyn Connor, Angelica Henry, Shanika Maddox, and Alexx Puckett make up the athletic freshmen class.
Good Bye Kimbel
The 2010-2011 season marks the final season the Coastal Carolina basketball will call Kimbel Arena home as the programs will move into the new Convocation Center next fall. The 1,039 seat Kimbel Arena has been the home of the Chanticleers since 1972. The Convocation Center will seat more than 3,600 fans for basketball and volleyball and more than 4,000 for graduation and other special events. It will also house offices and locker rooms for the men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball programs.
