Women's Basketball Picks Up 65-49 Win Over Erskine
CONWAY, S.C. – Freshman Olivia Irick (Columbia, S.C./W.J. Keenan) scored a game-high 16 points in her debut to lead the Coastal Carolina University women’s basketball team (1-0) to a 65-49 victory over Erskine Friday, Nov. 14 at Kimbel Arena. With the win tonight, Head Coach Alan LeForce recorded his 400th career victory. The Chanticleers controlled the game from the opening tip, with sophomore Sydnei Moss (North Augusta, S.C./North Augusta) recording the first basket of the season for the Chanticleers. Junior Amanda Stull (Rushville, Ind. /Rushville Consolidated) got the crowd into the game early, rejecting Erskine's Neci Allen. The pace seemed a bit rushed in the first five minutes, looking more like a tennis match as both team’s raced up and down the floor. The Chants settled down, earning a 30-16 advantage over the Lady Fleet heading into the break. Erskine trimmed the lead down single digits at 52-44 in the second half. Coastal Carolina stretched the lead back to 10 with Irick sinking one of two free throws after a hard foul under the basket. Erskine's Mary Ann Langford hit a three-pointer to pull the Lady Fleet back to within nine points but junior Devin Rivers (Miami, Fla. /Felix Varela) hit a quick jumper to put the Chanticleers ahead 59-48 with 2:44 remaining on the clock. Three free throws by sophomore Kate Jasinski (Toldeo, Ohio/Penn (Ind.)) sealed the victory for Coastal Carolina. Moss and Rivers posted double-doubles, with Moss earning 12 points and 13 rebounds while Rivers recorded 12 points and 10 rebounds against Erskine. The Chanticleers shot .403 from the field, while Erskine shot.273 as a team. The Chanticleers will be back in action Monday, Nov. 17, when they host Campbell at 7 p.m.
