Entering the program’s 44th season of competition, Coastal will look to continue its history of success in season-opening games. The Chants are 24-19 all-time in season openers, including a 16-4 record when those games are played at home. Friday’s meeting is the first ever between Coastal and Lees-McRae.
The 2017-18 Chants will be the youngest team under head coach Jaida Williams, who is entering her fifth season leading the team.
Five student-athletes are making returns from last season, including lone senior Jas Adams and lone returning starter Naheria Hamilton. Other returners include juniors Breelyn Blanding and Jamie Williams, and sophomore DJ Williams.
All seven newcomers to the team are freshmen, eclipsing the previous mark of six freshmen led by Williams during the 2015-16 campaign.
Friday’s contest kicks off a stretch of four straight home games to open the season. The Chants play a total of 17 games inside the HTC Center this year, tying the women’s record for most regular season games played inside the building since it opened in 2012-13. Coastal plays in three neutral-site games prior to beginning its Sun Belt schedule, and won’t face its first true road test until Jan. 4 at ULM.
Coastal vs. Piedmont International | 7:30 pm Live Stats
The Chanticleer men got a taste of the new season when they beat South Carolina State (84-69) in an exhibition game last Thursday, but officially begin the season versus Piedmont International. The Bruins, having already begun their season, bring a 2-0 record to the HTC Center.
Coastal enters its second season as a member of the Sun Belt, and looks to improve on its 10 conference wins from last year. A total of seven Chanticleers are returning from last season’s 20-plus win team, including starters Jaylen Shaw and Demario Beck.
Shaw was an All-Sun Belt selection last season as he led Coastal in scoring, and returns for his senior campaign. Beck, who was a preseason All-Sun Belt pick this year, averaged 10 points and eight rebounds, and had eight double-doubles.
Six newcomers dot the roster this season, with all expected to see plenty of action. The newcomers include five transfers and one freshman.
