CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina women’s basketball team had its first day of practice of the 2012-13 season on Monday evening at The HTC Center. The young squad has been working hard to build up the stamina needed for the quick-tempo style of play that 16th-year head coach Alan LeForce would like to employ this season.
“It was a good first day of practice,” said LeForce. “We made some mistakes, but we also did several things very well. The team had a great attitude and was very eager and ready to learn. I look forward to getting back to work in our second team practice tomorrow evening.”
After warming up, the team went through a series of fast break drills followed by individual and group work before concluding the inaugural basketball practice at The HTC Center with a 15 minute full court five-on-five session.
Sophomore Shatia Cole and juniors Angelica Henry and Kayla Cook are returnees with strong shooting skills. Cole was second on the team in scoring (10.5 ppg.) last year, the best of any returnee (behind departed senior Olivia Irick). Henry was fourth-best at 6.6 points per contest despite splitting time running the point with Cole. Cook finished last year strong, scoring nearly 60 percent of her points in Big South play.
Juniors Katelyn Connor and Alexx Puckett along with sophomore Savanah Pippin will look to lead the charge in the down low as the three are the Chants’ only as returning post players. The trio combined for 130 points last season playing behind departed seniors Taylor Epley and Courtney Grambley. Newcomers Ressa Borkovich and Megan Pittman will also be in the post player mix for the Chants.
The season kicks off for the Chanticleers on Nov. 9 at the College of Charleston.
Season tickets for both men’s and women’s basketball are on sale now and can be purchased online at GoCCUSports.com or by calling 843-347-8499.
