CONWAY- The Coastal Carolina women’s basketball team will begin preparing for the upcoming season as practice officially opens on Sunday, October 3. The Chanticleers will take the court at 1 p.m. for the first practice of the season and return at 7 p.m. for a second practice.
This is the first year for the revised NCAA rule that allows women’s basketball teams 40 days to complete 30 days of practice before the 2010-11 season officially begins on Friday, Nov. 12.
The Chanticleer coaching staff is optimistic about the season as three starters return from last year’s squad that finished 17-13 (7-9, Big South) and advanced to the semifinals of the Big South Tournament.
Headlining the starters returning for the Chanticleers this winter are senior standouts Sydnei Moss and Katie Ahaus. Moss averaged 15.4 points per game last season on her way to being named a second team All-Big South performer. Ahaus, a junior college transfer, recorded a team high 70 assists in her first year at Coastal.
LeForce will also welcome in six newcomers to the program as junior college transfer Kira Carter and five true freshmen take the court for their first practice as a Chanticleer.
“I am excited about the team that we have coming back,” said head coach Alan LeForce. “The returnees have worked hard in the off-season preparing for this year. I am also anxious to see our six new players on the court for the first time in team situations.”
The Chants, winners of 11 season openers in 13 seasons under LeForce, will host Southern Virginia on Friday, November 12. Tip-off for the contest is set for 5 p.m.
