Sept. 30, 2013
CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina women's basketball team, under the direction of first-year head coach Jaida Williams, held its first practice of the 2013-14 season Monday morning. The team spent the bulk of the energetic two-hour practice working on offense in preparation for the upcoming season. The session was the first of 30 in a 40-day span leading to their opening game of the season against Virginia Intermont.
"This was a good first day of practice," said Williams. "We spent most of the time implementing our offensive sets, which focus around an up-tempo pace of play."
Coastal returns 10 letter winners, including four starters, from last year's team and welcome two freshmen and three collegiate transfers. The Chants' returners are led by senior and leading scorer Angelica Henry, who averaged 11.1 points per outing a year ago. Overall, Coastal returns 80 percent of its points production and 86 percent of its rebounding.
"The returners looked like they should on the first day of practice," said Williams. "The seniors really showed a great deal of leadership and that is what we, as a new staff, need. There were some mistakes, but those are expected with it being the first day and with the team learning a new system."
The Chants will practice five days a week until their season-opening contest against Virginia Intermont on Nov. 9 at The HTC Center.
