CONWAY - The Williams era of Coastal Carolina University women's basketball will kick off on Nov. 9 against Virginia Intermont at The HTC Center, as part of the Chanticleers' 2013-14 schedule announced by first-year head coach Jaida Williams on Tuesday. Coastal's non-conference slate also includes games against Brevard, North Carolina Central, North Carolina, Montreat, College of Charleston, Furman and a two-day tournament at Seattle University.
"As a staff, we are excited to announce our schedule for the 2013-14 season," said Williams. "We believe our schedule will allow our student-athletes to develop as a cohesive unit and be placed in situations that will prepare us for the rigors of Big South Conference play."
The Chants host Claflin for an exhibition game on Oct. 27 before hosting Virginia Intermont in the season opener. Coastal's first road game will be at North Carolina Central on Nov. 17 before returning to the Tar Heel state to take on perennial power North Carolina.
Coastal will host Montreat on Nov. 25 before heading westward to play in the Seattle University-host Washington Dental Service Thanksgiving Tournament. The Chants will play the host Redhawks, who advanced to the WNIT last season, on Nov. 29. Coastal will conclude the tournament with a yet-to-be-determined-opponent on Nov. 30.
The first Big South Conference game of the year will be played on Dec. 5 when Gardner-Webb makes its annual trip to Conway.
Coastal will renew its rivalry with Furman on Dec. 15 then play its final non-conference contest against College of Charleston on Dec. 18 in the Chants' annual game as part of the CresCom Bank Carolinas Challenge at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center.
The Chanticleers enter into conference play after Christmas, beginning on Dec. 28 at Longwood. Coastal's January games at The HTC Center include High Point (Jan. 2), Liberty (Jan. 4), Winthrop (Jan. 13), UNC Asheville (Jan. 23) and Radford (Jan. 30). The Chants' February home Big South games are Longwood (Feb. 1), Campbell (Feb. 13), Charleston Southern (Feb. 20) and Presbyterian College (Feb. 22).
Coastal concludes its regular season of play on March 1 against UNC Asheville at the Bulldogs' Kimmel Arena.
For the second year the VistiMyrtleBeach.com Big South Basketball Championship will be hosted at The HTC Center on the Chanticleers' campus. The women's first round games will be held March 5, followed by quarterfinals on March 7, semifinals on March 8 and the championship game on March 9. The winner advances to the NCAA Tournament, which begins March 22.
