Women's Basketball Trio Earns All-Big South Honors

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – A trio of Coastal Carolina University women’s basketball players earned All-Big South honors at the annual banquet before the 2008 Advance Auto Parts Big South Women’s Basketball Championships March 13. Senior Vicky Blanchard (Eutawille, S.C./Holly Hill-Roberts) was named to the All-Big South Second Team, freshman Sydnei Moss (North Augusta, S.C./North Augusta) earned Big South All-Freshman Team honors and senior C.J. Ware (Decatur, Ga./Lakeside) was named to the Big South All-Academic Team.   Blanchard earns her first career All-Big South honor. She leads the Lady Chanticleers and is fifth in the Big South in rebounds, averaging 7.1 caroms a contest. Blanchard has five double-doubles on the year, including three in conference play. She had a season-high 24 points in a win over Charleston Southern Feb. 5, scoring 22 of the 24 points in the first half. Blanchard also scored 15 points in the last 8:46 against High Point Feb. 9. She pulled down a career high 15 rebounds Jan. 26 against UNC Asheville and was named Big South Player of the Week Nov. 13 after hitting the game-winning layup in a win over Wofford. Blanchard is averaging 10.4 points per game and that goes up to 12.1 points in conference games.   Moss becomes the fourth Lady Chant to earn All-Freshman honors in the last two seasons. She has scored in double figures five times in Big South games and has been named Big South Freshman of the Week twice. Moss had 13 points, 11 in the second half, in the win over Charleston Southern March 1. In the win over Wofford Nov. 13, Moss had the steal that set up the game-winning basket. She went 7-of-8 from the free-throw line in the last 4:23 of a nine-point win over Savannah State Feb. 2. In her first career start against Charleston Southern Feb. 5, Moss had 12 points and four rebounds. Moss is averaging 6.6 points and 3.2 rebounds a contest.   Ware earns All-Academic honors for the second straight season. An elementary education major with a 3.69 grade-point-average, Ware is averaging 5.9 points, 2.4 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game. Ware has 24 steals on the year and had a career high 18 points in the win over South Carolina State Nov. 20. She has played in 103 games in her Coastal career and has 359 points and 220 assists in her four years. Ware had six rebounds in wins over the College of Charleston and Stetson and went 6-for-6 from the free-throw line in wins over Wofford and Stetson.   In other specialty awards, Liberty’s Megan Frazee was named the Big South Player of the Year, while the Lady Flames’ Carey Green was the Coach of the Year. High Point’s Mackenzie Maier was the Big South Freshman of the Year and Radford’s Kelli Darden was named the Defensive Player of the Year. Liberty’s Allyson Fasnacht was the Big South Scholar-Athlete of the Year.   Coastal is the fifth seed in the Big South Tournament and faces fourth-seeded High Point Friday, March 14 at 2 p.m., in the Justice Center in Asheville, N.C.
