Women's Basketball's Dill Named Big South Player of the Year, Trio Earn All-Freshman Team Honors

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Coastal Carolina University women’s basketball senior Alisha Dill (Johnson City, Tenn./Science Hill) was named the Big South Conference’s Player of the Year, the League announced at its pre-tournament banquet March 7 in Asheville, N.C. Freshmen Lacey Lyons (Beverly Hills, Fla./Crystal River), Devin Rivers (Miami, Fla./Felix Varela) and Amanda Stull (Rushville, Ind./Rushville Consolidated) were selected to the All-Freshman Team and junior C.J. Ware (Decatur, Ga./Lakeside) was selected to the League’s All-Academic Team.

Dill becomes the second Coastal women’s basketball player to earn Player of the Year honors. Brooke Weisbrod was selected in the 2000-01 season. Dill is averaging 22.5 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game. She broke Coastal’s all-time single-season scoring record and now has 631 points in 2006-07. Her scoring average is fourth in the country and would be first overall in Coastal history if it stays the same. Dill is hitting free throws at a 76.2 percent clip and leads the team with 62 three-pointers. She had a season high 33 points against Campbell Dec. 11 and has scored 26 or more points 11 times this season. Dill was a four-time Big South Player of the Week honoree. She also earned First Team All-Big South honors to go along with her All-Big South Second Team honor last season.

The freshman trio double the number of All-Freshman Team members in Coastal history. Lisa O’Connor (1997-98), Brooke Weisbrod (1997-98) and Nikki Reddick (1999-2000) were Coastal’s previous All-Freshman Team members.

Lyons is averaging 8.0 points, which is second on the team, and 2.3 rebounds a game. She had a season high 30 points in an 85-78 win over Howard Nov. 26 and hit five three-pointers against second-ranked North Carolina Dec. 18. Lyons is a two-time Big South Freshman of the Week and she set the school record for three-pointers in a season by a freshman (43). She has scored in double figures 10 times this season and has seven rebounds in a game twice.

Rivers is averaging 3.7 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.6 steals per game her freshman season. She is tied for the team lead in blocked shots with 19. Rivers was selected the Big South Freshman of the Week Dec. 18 and had eight points, eight rebounds and three steals in a win over North Greenville Dec. 13. Rivers had nine rebounds Jan. 15 against Radford and tied a Coastal high with five steals Jan. 4 against Coker.

Stull is averaging 4.0 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game this season. She is a two-time Big South Freshman of the Week honoree and is shooting 44.8 percent from the field. She has scored nine points in a game twice and grabbed eight rebounds in a win over Savannah State Jan. 9. Stull has 37 steals on the year and had four in a win over Winthrop Jan. 31. She also had a season-high eight assits in a win over Converse Dec. 31.

Ware, who has a 3.68 grade-point-average in elementary education, is averaging 4.2 points, 2.9 rebounds and 2.5 assists this season. She has started all 28 games for the Lady Chants and had a career high 11 points in a loss to IPFW Nov. 25. Ware set a career high with eight rebounds in a loss to UNC Greensboro Dec. 16. She is second on the team with 69 assists and has seven assists in games against North Greenville and Savannah State.

In other specialty awards, Radford’s Kelli Darden was named the Big South Defensive Player of the Year, UNC Asheville’s Kyla Jones was the Freshman of the Year, High Point’s Tooey Loy was tne Coach of the Year and HPU’s Leslie Cook was the Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
