CONWAY, S.C.Senior Amber Rose (Bloomington Springs, Tenn./Upperman) and junior Alisha Dill (Johnson City, Tenn./Science Hill) scored 22 points apiece as the Coastal Carolina University womens basketball team (17-9, 7-7 Big South) defeated Charleston Southern 65-46 March 4 in Conway, S.C. With the win and a Birmingham-Southern win over UNC Asheville, Coastal earns the third seed in the 2006 Advance Auto Parts Big South Womens Basketball Tournament and will host Birmingham-Southern Tuesday, March 7 at 7 p.m.
Layups by senior Kim Turner (West Memphis, Ark./Hiwassee C.C.) and Dill gave Coastal an early 4-0 lead. Coastal made it 7-1 on free throws by Rose, but Charleston Southern went on a 10-0 run that was capped by an Erica McCoy layup at 11:21. A three by Rose and two free throws from senior Demaria Young (Memphis, Tenn./Walters State C.C.) gave Coastal a 12-11 lead at 9:54. The advantage would go back-and-forth, as there were four ties in the first half. Coastal took the lead with 3:35 left on a three-pointer from Rose and had a 27-24 halftime advantage with six seconds left on a jumper from Dill.
Rose led Coastal with 14 points, while Turner had seven points and eight rebounds. For Charleston Southern, Keena Wicker and Erica McCoy, who had eight points. McCoy added seven rebounds.
Coastal would jump out to a 34-24 lead with 18:02 left on a layup from sophomore C.J. Ware (Decatur, Ga./Lakeside). However, Charleston Southern would go on an 13-1 run, as Pam Tolberts layup with 14:43 left gave the Lady Bucs a 37-35 lead. Dill hit a three-pointer and a layup that gave CCU at 44-39 lead and another Dill three extended the lead to 49-39. Charleston Southern cut the lead to seven with 7:33 left, but that would be as close as the Lady Bucs would get. CCU would go on a 7-0 run, capped by a free throw by Ware with four minutes remaining. The Lady Chants went 8-for-8 from the line in the last 2:44 for the 19-point win.
Rose had a career high with her 22 points. She was a perfect 9-for-9 from the free-throw line. Dill was 4-for-6 from three-point range for her 22 points. Turner had nine boards, while junior Calisha Yates (Columbus, Ind./Chattanooga State C.C.) added eight and Dill had seven.
Charleston Southern was led by Wicker, who had a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds. McCoy added 10 points and seven rebounds.
As a team, Coastal was 7-for-17 from three-point range and outrebounded Charleston Southern 42-40.
Coastal will host the Panthers, while Charleston Southern will be at Liberty Tuesday at 7 p.m.
NOTES: The last time Coastal hosted a Big South Tournament game was in 2004 against Birmingham-Southern. It was a semifinal matchup after Coastal upset High Point 68-62... This is the fourth time that Rose scored 20 or more points... Coastal finished the regular season in a three-way tie for third with Winthrop and Radford...
