Women's Basketball Falls to High Point 65-59 on Senior Day at Kimbel

CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina University women’s basketball team (15-11, 3-8 Big South) fell to High Point (14-14, 6-6 Big South) 65-59 March 1 on Senior Day in Kimbel Arena. Coastal dropped its fourth game in a row in its penultimate regular-season contest.   Coastal never took a lead inthe game, but had it at a four-point margin at the break. High Point was up 14-6 at 11:32 on a jumper by Jennifer Long. Coastal would cut that lead to 19-15 at 7:46 on a three-pionter from freshman Jessica Noll (Myrtle Beach, S.C./St. James). The Panthers answered that with a 6-0 run, capped by a Mackenzie Maier layup at 6:18. Coastal would then score six straight points to cut the lead to 27-23 at 2:24. HPU’s Ayonna Thompson made it a 29-23 lead at 1:04, but two free throws from sophomore Devin Rivers (Miami, Fla./Felix Varela) made it29-25 at the break.   Rivers had seven points in the first half, including going 3-of-6 from the free-throw line. Sophomore Amanda Stull (Rushville, Ind./Rushville Consolidated) had seven rebounds, while senior Vicky Blanchard (Eutawville, S.C./Holly Hill-Roberts) grabbed six rebounds. For High Point, Jurica Hargraves had 13 first-half points.   High Point opened the second half on a 7-0 run, but Coastal would trim the lead to 40-35 at 13:46 on a jumper from sophomore Lacey Lyons (Beverly Hills, Fla./Crystal River). Lyons’ free throws at 11:53 made it 42-37 HPU, but that would be as close as the Lady Chanticleers would get. The Panthers would score five straight points after Lyons’ free throws and would have as much as a 12-point second half lead. Lyons’ three-pointer at 3:34 made it 58-52, but the Panthers would score six straight points, capped by two Maier free throws, and then ice the game at the foul line for their sixth Big South win of the year.   Rivers had a career high 14 points, going 6-of-10 from the free-throw line. Lyons added 11 points, while Noll came off the bench with nine. Blanchard led Coastal with 11 rebounds, while Stull added nine. Rivers also had four steals for the Lady Chants.    Hargraves led all scorers with 22 points, going 7-of-12 from the field. Maier added 17 points and had three blocks.    Coastal shot 36.2 percent from the field in the game and were 14-of-21 from the free-throw line. Coastal outrebounded HIgh Point 43-26, but the Panthers were 44.6 percent from the field and 7-of-16 from three-point range.   Coastal honored its three seniors, C.J. Ware (Decatur, Ga./Lakeside), Blanchard and Joanna Pekonen (Lappeenranta, Finland/Lafayette) before the game.   Coastal will end the regular season Wednesday, March 5 at Charleston Southern. Game time is at 7 p.m. HIgh Point concluded its regular season and will play next at the 2008 Advance Auto Parts Big South Tournament in Asheville, N.C.
