Last Time Out
Coastal Carolina won its second straight game with a 57-50 victory over Presbyterian College on Feb. 22.
Senior post players Alexx Puckett and Katelyn Connor led CCU with 15 and 14 points, respectively. AJ Jordan also scored in double-figures with 12 points.
Coastal led the entire game, expanding its lead to as much as 16.
The Chants weathered a 15-2 Presbyterian run through the middle of the second half before outscoring the Blue Hose 12-6 to end the game.
The win was Coastal's first this season when scoring fewer than 60 points.
Coastal limited Presbyterian to 39.3 percent from the field, including 15.4 percent from three.
Presbyterian was led offensively by Keyonna Allen's 20 points.
Coastal Carolina vs. Gardner-Webb
Coastal Carolina and Gardner-Webb have met 13 times in the all-time series with Gardner-Webb holding a slim 7-6 advantage; however, Coastal has won four of the last five meetings.
Coastal defeated the Runnin' Bulldogs in both regular season meetings last year; however, Gardner-Webb ended the Chants' season in the opening round of the 2013 VisitMyrtleBeach.com Big South Basketball Championships.
The Chanticleers won the teams' first meeting of the season by a 85-63 margin back on Dec. 8. Alexx Puckett led Coastal to the win with a 24-point, 11-rebound double-double.
Coastal is 2-3 all-time in games played at the Runnin' Bulldogs' Paul Porter Arena.
Coastal Carolina wraps up the regular season Saturday at UNC Ashville. The game, which will be carried live on ESPN3, is scheduled for 2 p.m.
On The Line vs. Gardner-Web ... A Bye, Bye, Bye
Thursday is arguably the Chanticleers' most important game of the season as the No. 5 seed in the VisitMyrtleBeach.com Big South basketball Championship is on the line. The fifth seed carriers the award of a bye to the quarterfinal round of the tournament where the fourth and fifth seed will face off for a spot in the semifinal round.
A Coastal win would keep the Chanticleers' chances of an over .500 regular season record alive.
A Coastal victory would be the team's 10th Big South win of the season, equaling the 1993-94 team for the most in program history. (The 1993-94 team finished its Big South schedule with a 18-8 mark.)
What You May Not Know About the Series
The series started during the 2008-09 season when Gardner-Webb joined the Big South Conference.
The sides have met twice in the Big South Tournament with the Runnin' Bulldogs claiming victories in both games.
Coastal won the first two games in the series before Gardner-Webb reeled off six straight wins from 2010-2012.
Bucking All The Trends
Coastal's 57-50 win over Presbyterian College was unique in several ways for the Chanticleers. Coastal failed to reach numerous game milestones that have equated to wins throughout the season, but still found a way to hang on for the victory.
The win was Coastal's first when scoring fewer than 60 points (entered game 0-4)
The win was the first when corralling fewer than 40 rebounds (entered game 0-7)
Second win of the season when shooting a lower percentage from the field than opponent (entered game 1-13)
Third win of the year when scoring fewer points in the paint than opponent (entered game 2-11)
Fifth win of the season when scoring fewer second chance points than opponent (entered game 4-10)
Coastal has already set two programs records this season, including a 4-0 start to conference play and the largest margin of victory in a conference game (30 points at Longwood on Dec. 28).
The Chants can to tie or pass the 1993-94 team for the most conference wins in program history with one or two wins this week.
In addition, the 2013-14 Chants can join the 2006-07 team as just the second Chanticleer squad to enter postseason on a four-game win streak.
Proving Them Wrong
After falling to Gardner-Webb in the 8 vs. 9 game of the Big South Tournament last season, the Chanticleers were picked to finish ninth in the league this season according to the league's annual preseason poll of head coaches and media members. However, with two games remaining in the regular season the Chanticleers will finish no lower than sixth in the final regular season standings.
Coastal is guaranteed to finish ahead of Longwood, Presbyterian and Radford -- each of which were selected ahead of the Chants in the preseason poll.
