ROANOKE, VA Coastal Carolina University sophomores Nikki Reddick and Whitney Shearer earned awards Tuesday evening at the Big South Conference womens basketball awards banquet, held at the Hotel Roanoke.
Reddick, the Big South's leading scorer, was selected to the All-Conference First Team, while Shearer earned All-Academic Team honors for her combined efforts on the court and in the classroom.
In other awards announced at the banquet, Elon sophomore Holly Andrews was named Player of the Year and Liberty freshman Kristal Tharp was tabbed Rookie of the Year. Coach of the Year went to Radfords Kristen Holt, a first-year coach who guided her team to a third place finish after being chosen eighth in the Preseason. Winthrops Charlotta Wennefors was tabbed as the womens basketball Scholar-Athlete. The awards, as well as the All-Conference teams, the All-Rookie team and the All-Academic team were presented at the banquet, which serves as the kick-off to the 2002 Advance Auto Parts Big South Conference Basketball Championship, which begins at the Roanoke Civic Center on Wednesday.
The All-Conference teams, the All-Rookie team, and the Player, Rookie and Coach of the Year awards are voted on by the Leagues head coaches, sports information directors and selected media. The Scholar-Athlete award and the All-Academic team are selected by the sports information directors.
