The Coastal Carolina University womens basketball team (9-14) went on a 12-5 run in the last 5:35 and the Lady Chanticleers hit big free throws down the stretch to defeat Savannah State University (6-18) 59-53 Feb. 24, in a non-conference affair in Savannah, Ga. Coastal has now won four of its last six games.
Coastal opened the game with a 6-2 run, fueled by four points from sophomore Alisha Dill (Johnson City, Tenn./Science Hill). Savannah State would tie it at six on a layup from Shamice James and would lead by four at 12:27 on a steal and layup from Kermetris Hill. Coastal took a 13-12 lead on a three from Dill and would take its last lead at 7:20 on a fast break layup by junior Jasmine Tyler (Jacksonville, Fla./Okaloosa C.C.). The Tigers would go on an 11-3 run to lead 27-20 with 3:05 left, but the Lady Chants would cut the lead going into the lockerroom. Senior Lucia Popovici (Edmonton, Alberta/Jasper Place) hit a jumper at 2:22 to make it 29-24 SSU. Junior Kim Turner (West Memphis, Ark./Hiwassee C.C.) then hit a jumper at 1:31 and a layup with 28 seconds left to make it 29-28 at the half.
Dill led CCU with nine points and three rebounds, while Turner had eight points and five rebounds. Junior Demaria Young (Memphis, Tenn./Walters State C.C.) had four first-half assists. For Savannah State, Hill had nine points. The Tigers shot 45.2 percent, compared to 35.1 for the Lady Chants.
Coastal would start the second half strong, as a Turner layup at 17:17 gave the Lady Chants at 34-31 lead. Savannah State led by as many as six points in the second half, as a layup from Lakisha Green at 11:44 gave the Tigers a 44-38 lead. Coastal soon would take the lead, as a 7-0 run was driven by five points from senior Courtney Brown (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch). Savannah State would take its last lead of the game at 5:35 on a layup from Nicole Hunter. Dill hit a three at 5:11, making it 50-48 Coastal. Tyler then made a layup to give the Lady Chants at three-point advantage. Hunter hit 1-of-2 free throws for SSU, but freshman C.J. Ware (Decatur, Ga./Lakeside) hit 5-of-6 free throws down the stretch that gave the Chants the six-point win.
Turner had her second double-double of the season with 18 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. Dill added 12 points, while Young had a game-high and tied a career high with seven assists. Hill had 18 points to lead Savannah State, while Hunter had 13 points and 13 rebounds.
Coastal outrebounded Savannah State 47-45 and had 16 assists on 24 field goals. Savannah State went only 6-for-18 at the free-throw line.
Coastal will play its last regular-season game in Kimbel Arena Saturday, Feb. 26, against UNC Asheville. Game time is at 2 p.m., and can be heard on THE TEAM 93.9 FM in Myrtle Beach. Seniors Brown and Popovici will be honored before the game.
